front control arm bushing (rear) - bad?
80k 2014 outback 3.6R, Vermont (snow, salt, etc). I am in the process of changing driver side wheel hub and noted that rear bushing on the control arm looks not healthy to my ignorant eye: rubber separates from the middle bolt/spindle/whateveritis:
I (or wife who drives it usually) have not mentioned any noises/vibrations. I wonder, 1. if I should replace that rear bushing while doing work there anyways (have a press, might need to borrow adapter), or such rubber from metal separation is "normal" and I shouldn't bother unless there are symptoms. 2. what part? I have tried to find the OEM part, which seems to be 20204AG011 but parts.subaru.com can't confirm fitment (will call local one tomorrow after they reopen). edit: according to www.subarupartsdeal.com search based on VIN it is actually 20204AJ020, so my initial search was wrong I guess. 3. is it ok to replace one but not the other (side)? thanks in advance for the feedback

This could start to make noise, the broken bushing allowing the arm to slide downand contact the subframe, would definitely replace. as far as doing the other side.... if its not broke don't fix rule could apply, but it too will eventually fail.

yeah - I ended up deciding to replace it (just one side for now).
And it became a (not yet complete) journey. That rear bushing bolt was completely seized in the arm + bushing. I first cut at the top of the bushing, and then at the bottom (after soaking in PB and trying to impact wrench wiggle it for too long), and even then it took it a bit of force and banging to get it out from the arm. It had lots of crud inside which I have cleaned up now and whatever left of the bolt goes in smoothly now -- it is all ready to be replaced. As for cutting -- top one I did with the grinding disc (nice but dangerous), bottom did with a cheap 3$ reciprocating blade from home depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DIABLO-6...8BFD/202049533 . It seems to be sufficient for a single cut (had to trim the tip after half done so I could put not yet used part of the blade to use for the 2nd half). ATM waiting for all the spare parts: broke also the ball joint bolt in the wheel hub - replacing the hub to not mess with taking ball joint out -- should have just left it alone heh heh, had to cut the sway bar link since it was impossible to take it off as well - also greedy me replacing on one side only for now. |
