As was mentioned, this is just a bill on the floor now, the link provided in the first post is the proposed wording, should the bill pass, but it hasn't gone anywhere. If history is any guide, it won't go anywhere.

For those of you interested in seeing this actually go somewhere this year, rather than just sit on the floor as it does every year, call your representatives, send regular mail to them, email them. Hell, send it to representatives that aren't your own. Reference this bill in the subject. It is only via this method will you be able to help to influence the opinion of those you elected (or didn't elect, or sat idly by and watched others elect). Otherwise, they'll only be influenced by lobbying groups, or their own opinion.

@ Gary B. I'd recommend you pass this on to the other forums you've posted this to and suggest they do the same.

Thanks for the link, I'd advise regular mail as well, yeah, it costs the postage, but sending a real form letter will get more attention than just an email.

I remember once my wife was pulled over and the jackass gave her a ticket for no front LP. Then when she went to court the even bigger jackass judge said the officer wrote it for NO PLATES being on the car and fined her something like 300 dollars.

She asked the judge that if there were no plates on the car at all, how the officer was able to write the plate number on the ticket? The judge said it didn't matter that's what was written. The officer wasn't there to back up his mistake.

That's the one thing that sucks about any traffic citation...there's no way for you to PROVE anything and you're just basically taking it in the butt. Same thing for speeding. Basically if an LEO wants to give you a ticket they can, regardless if you were actually breaking any laws.

this simply isn't true.

it's probable that your wife was at the pretrial thingy where they ask if you admit guilt, or would like a trial and tried to argue the case at that time. of course the cop doesn't show up for this, and if you wife tried to say that the ticket was wrongfully issued the judge won't listen, cause you aren't pleading your case at this time, just admitting guilt, or setting a trial date.

so, what it sounds like happened is your wife is dumb because she didn't understand what was going on and admitted fault/paid the fine rather than asking for a trial, where the cop would have shown, or if he didn't, your lawyer would have been able to get you out of it for the cost of his fee.

Gonna have to agree with this.

I got a ticket for no front plate. All i had to do was take a picture of the front of my car with a plate on and mail it in with like 60 bucks. Dumbest ticket ever.

Nope. It wasn't a trial. Because if the officer wasn't there, her ticket would have been dismissed. Sounds to me like what everyone else said. She admitted to it instead of choosing to fight the ticket and then had to eat the cost and got upset.

And your statement about getting tickets without breaking the law is pretty ignorant. I hae plenty of LEO friends and have been in police cars on ride-alongs a lot. You would be surprised how easy it is to give someone a ticket when they're driving.

If a cop follows you for more than a mile, he could easily come up with at least three things to pull you over for without even stretching too hard.

Costs too much to implement. It'll never happen. Plus, the old MFers passing laws won't be able to pass those exams, which means it DEFINIATLY will not happen.

She was already at the courthouse once, and was at that point denied the option already of taking photos of the vehicle and was instead told that she had to be in court to plead her case at the later date. That's why she had gone yet again to the courthouse. It was there that the judge listened to her, and basically said "I don't believe you" and made her pay the fine for no plates at all even though the plate number was on the ticket. It doesn't matter that the LEO wasn't there, because there's not a rule that says a judge has to throw out a case because the police officer doesn't show up. It's a myth. I've seen this myself on a number of occasions when I was at the courthouse myself years ago. Regardless this was in a small suburb where the judges / cops are known for being arseholes. So the outcome didn't surprise me.

And yes...police officers also do pull people over for bogus charges, happens all the time. If you think they're all saints, then you probably haven't met many cops. I have known of cops that admitted (to friends) that they make sheit up and add on charges that aren't valid, just because the guy pissed them off or made them "work". Granted I have known leo's that also let people off with warnings as well when they could have charged the person. I train a few LEO's in martial arts, and hear their stories of all the crap that happens and the little things that they do when the "perp" doesn't cooperate fully. I understand that comes with the job and that the seriousness of what's being done is relative, but the bottom line is, you guys make it seem like there's no way a judge would be impartial and no way a cop would ever do anything "wrong", which is far from reality.

I dont wear a front plate on 2 of the 4 vehicles I own, all registered in this state. I got a verbal warning/ recommendation from a williamson county deputy to put a front plate on my suby once, but never did. We all agree its a complete waste of money. The area I live in doesnt really care either, except a couple DPS troopers that are douche bags anyways. There are plates here from about every state in the union, so the cops dont have time to look at the front of the vehicle for a texas plate and reg and insp stickers.

but hey I hope this bill passes anyways, maybe they will give us a discount the first year if you turn in your old front plate to recycle.

I mounted my front plate on my passenger mirror.

No idea on the legality but I assume its better than being on top of my spare tire.

A close friend of mine works for a local State Representative. I will be asking for his assistance with this personally!

Btw, I have no front plate on my Legacy... and haven't been bothered once. I don't want to be bothered about it either!

Code:
Dearest Esteemed Representative,

Please vote yes to the proposed changes to the license plate laws which are put forth in H.B. No. 657.

I think this is a good idea cause having 2 license plates are ugly.

thanks for your consideration in helping to make Texas a prettier state.

but seriously, you should hit on:

1. it will reduce time wasted on court proceedings.
2. it will reduce wasted resources.
3. with camera systems maintained by state and city officials the current reasoning that a front license plate helps easily identify cars is redundant.
