Question Sport Edition rims on TireRack?

I am shopping for some rims for my 05 WRX w/ stock suspension. I am looking for 18s and I noticed that those sport edition rims are ridiculously cheap (not saying its a bad thing)... what do you guys know about them?... Why are they so cheap?...

Made in China and Thailand. Not necessarily a bad thing. My impression is they're Tire Rack's "house brand".

I've got a set of the F5's which I used on my OBS for summer and have kept for my WRX for winter. They seem of good quality. FWIW, mine have "Kosei" and "Japan" cast into the back side of the spokes.

Now that's interesting info.

Sport Editions are made by Kosei?

CAN TIRE RACK CONFIRM?

People on this website sweat about wheel weights more than any other automotive forum I've ever visited. If I took all the people on this site that complain about wheels being too heavy and did a blind test of two different wheel weights on the same car with the same tires back to back, I'd be willing to bet that 95+% of the people wouldn't be able to tell me which set was the heavier set.

If you like the way the wheels look, buy 'em. Is 22.5# the lightest 18x8" wheel in the world? No, certainly not. But I've seen wheels in that size that were in the 26-27# range, so 22.5# isn't bad at all. Looking at www.wheelweights.net listed by size, in an 18x8" the weights range from 14.5# (for a forged magnesium wheel) to 34# ( the appropriately-named "Millenium Kurbkrusher" ).

The vast majority of wheels are painted, so no, there's no reason to avoid painted rims.

That ALL sport editions are made by Kosei, and not just the F5's.

-1 on the wheel weight blind test.

No doubt there are people with numb butt dynos; but 95% feels quite high. One example, the dude I sold me previous car to knew "some thing was different" (his daughter had the same car) and figured out I had put +1 wheels on the car. If someone has any sensitivity to driving dynamics (and they should if you are any good at HDPE's, autox, etc), then they'd notice wheel/tire weight differences. Maybe not 1 lbs deltas, but 5 lbs.

If you can't feel wheel&tire weight differences, then you must not be able to tell PSI differences either.

They are pretty heavy and the looks aren't my cup of tea.

For an 18x8 they are NOT that heavy. If these are a wheel/tire package for a daily driver, I say go for it.

I had Sport Edition rims on my Mazda, loved them. Should have taken them off before selling the car.

Usually, you want to go with a 1lb/in rule...so a lightweight wheel would be 17lbs and below for 17", 18lbs. for 18", etc.

But if you're just using this for the street (few subarus are actually tracked or raced on 18"s...) the weight isn't that big of a deal.

I had a set on my old TS and they were on the heavy side, but took all the abuse running down back roads in Alaska could dish out.

I used to have a set on my 98 obs, nad they were a great set of wheels for the money... My only regret is that I didn't take them off to use at winter weels when I got my new WRX.

A +1 upgrade is more than just a change in weight, unless it just so happened that you put the exact same tires on your car that his daughter had on her car, and somehow you made those tires have the exact same turn-in response and grip despite having a shorter sidewall.

Of course, my blind test would depend on the weight difference of the wheels. I imagine the vast majority of people would feel the difference between some 14.5# forged magnesium wheels and the 34# Kurbkrushers. But a 2 or 3# weight difference, which people often sweat about here, I think would be imperceptible to the vast majority of the people who sweat about it.

It's the same argument against plus sizing your wheels you see here all the time. GRM has shown plus sizing CAN give you better lap times than running a stock sized wheel, but everyone here acts like if you plus size you're going to screw the pooch from terrible handling and acceleration due to added weight.

Ok, maybe it's not the same argument, but it falls into the whole "if you add any weight to your wheels you might as well turn the car in for a semi as it'll accelerate and turn better than your car now."

Tire rack's house brand of wheels called "Sport Edition" has some attractive designs. But BEWARE! The price is too good to be true. I picked up a set of Sport Edition P5 wheels and after only 5 days the paint was flaking off around the center caps and lugs.

Tire rack told me to take it up with the installer and that they wouldn't help me. The installer said that they have never seen such weak paint on a wheel. These things are JUNK! It would take some serious negligence to cause that much damage on the first installation.

Now I am stuck with them. They do look nice on the car but I will have to have them powder coated next time I get tires. By then I'm sure they will be just ugly.

Beware!
