Man.. I'd really like to see what you're doing to get anywhere close, much less over, 40 MPG.

My best has been 29.6 on a tank that was half highway driving. Fuelly.com lists the 2012 Impreza as averaging 27.9 MPG based on 235 cars driving 2.6 million miles, and the 2013 Impreza as averaging 28 MPG based on 141 cars driving just under 990K miles.

I just don't see an Impreza closing in on 40 MPG even with an additive.

What kind of black magic is this?!
No black magic...

65% highway, 30% rural, 5% urban
87E0 fuel with TC-W3
Tires at 40 PSI
55-60 MPH max
Block heater starts (where available)

That number would have been higher if I didn't get my morning coffee from a drive-thru, but I'm only willing to go so far.

Wow, you run your psi fairly high. How's the ride quality at 40 psi? Most of the roads where I live are pretty bad. I'm not sure I'd want to go above 30/32.

The ride quality is decent. Passengers haven't complained.

Mine's set at 36psi, I used to run them at 30>32 the after I complained at a Subaru service of the steering being a little vague at 70 mph straight ahead especially in cross winds. Despite the dealer telling everything steering wise was ok next time out on the Highway in cross winds found the steering was better. Checking the tire pressures revealed the dealer had set them at 36 so will leave them at 36. Personally I think the ride is better now that it was at 32.

The "gear oil" smell I had is from the TC-W3 I'm using. I happened to smell it when adding the other day, and absolutely a match. Lol
I'm not using over 1 oz per 8-10 gallons so I'm not using too much. I think its either a little that sits in filler neck, or just that this particular brand smells stronger. It's from Oreilly Auto and its Masterpro marine TC-w3

Expect significantly higher middle tread wear

You need to double your concentration, it isnt high enough to be effective.

The stuff I'm using doesn't smell good, but nothing like gear oil, and doesn't change exhaust smell

Don't think so I usually run between 34>36 in my cars ( the Impreza is my wifes ) since my Defensive drivers course in '97 without any significant centre wear on 55 or lower profiled tires. just my wifes previous Mazada 6 seemed a bit harsh for her at 36 so left it at 32. Was a little surprised the Impreza rides better at 36 than 32 so think its a Win / Win.

A little off topic, but does anyone know when gas stations start getting the winter blend gas? Is there a certain date they start distributing it?

Can switch as soon as September 15th. So, as soon as stations need a refill after September 15th, it's probably winter gas. They have to be back on summer gas by June 1.

From what I read anyways...

i ran my stock yokos at 35/33 for the first 25k, then i went back to stock pressure. when i removed them at 30k the middle was at the wear bars and the outer edges were at 4/32-5/32 remaining...

pretty sure they already did, or it is the fact that all my gas now has ethanol that my mpg has dropped

Guess I'll see how they go at 36 as I prefer them there, even if the tires only last 25K miles I'll be happy.

It seems I'm not alone running the Impreza at higher PSIs, check sections " Tyre pressure and gas-mileage " & " What's the "correct" tyre pressure? " in carbibles.com it mentions the Impreza is better at slightly higher PSI's.

it depends on tires for sure, my new Continental's do great at stock pressure, much better than the stock junkers

I finally figured out a dispenser. 1qt gear oil bottle with the pointy spout. I happened to have one on the shelf and it works well. They are cheap too, so I'm going to buy one more

My average on 2 tanks of 89e10 no tcw3 is at 28.2. Going back to adding tcw3 and will report back, weather should be pretty stable over the next few weeks so should be a good test I think. I'm thinking my mpg should be higher as indicated before with the tcw3.

I also think they switched to winter blend because fleetwide for us our mpg has dropped about 10%. It could be the e10 in everything now, but since winter blend is cheaper to produce I'm thinking they switched already.

On my 3rd tank of this. Don't notice any MPG change, but with the temps dropping and the winter blend coming in, it's hard to tell. It does seem to run a little smoother and throttle feels more consistent, I dunno....

I'm going to jump in here and say that for everyone posting figured you are forgetting the key figures like what engine you have, elevation you are driving at(avg) and conditions for the drive average. These are all factors people forget when posting this as you will see variences with any three factors alone let alone together so a post should be something like this if you want to give accurate data.

Car model 2003 wrx
Engine 2.0L turbo
Elevation roughly 5000-7000 ft ( pueblo, Colorado Springs)
Driving usually highway with about 25% in town
Weather low humidity ( yes this makes a difference, got worse gas mileage in humid areas then dry example driving in ga vs driving in az)
Gas 91 octane e10
Gas mileage 26-28 depending on winter or Summer blend

This will help lower confusion on it and be able to track certain vehicle trends much better.

Tank history with TC-W3:

10/11/2013 87E0 40.2 MPG
10/23/2013 87E10 39.9 MPG

Next tank is E0.

You do realize that you are making a decision based on .007 percent change in fuel mileage that could be caused by a million different variables and only from one tank of gas if you want an accurate number need to do it over multitude of tanks of gas in a row with as many similar variables you can.

To be honest after reading through most these posts no one is taking a scientific thorough approach with multitude of data points to base research off of. People are making decisions off of this so lets try to get accurate repeatable results with all the data.

It's actually 0.7%, but I haven't made any decision. I've only posted a tank of E0 and E10. Since both were treated with TC-W3 there's nothing to compare yet.

This is something that affects entire tanks, and over a tank, many different things can affect mileage.

Flyboy has posted plenty of data, including blind testing on his wife's car.

If you want to join in and conduct your own experiment, feel free.
