Jdm Ea82t
i have been looking at jdm EA82T motors. does anyone have any experience with these motors? any comments on their reliability or performance? i drive a 93 impreza with a naturally aspirated 1.8L and was looking for a replacement if the original ever craps out. before i try and post any questions about a possible swap, id like to hear from someone who has had experience with this kind of engine.

I have a bit of experience with the EA82T
The first thing I can tell you is that it won't just bolt in to your impreza. Its a different family of motors. YOu would be better off finding an EJ20G and stuffing it in there. Either way you would need the wiring harness and ECU for whatever motor you decided to use. If you decided to go with the EA82T, you would need a trans adapter plate as well. How much HP does the EJ18 produce. The EA82T only produces 111-115 stock |

Yeah, true that.
Here here,
I am also afflicted with an ej18 NA in a 96 imp. If I was going for an engine swap, I would seek out (for all the effort and expense involved) an ej20 or ej22. Seeing as how a wiring harness swap is imminent, you may as well have that ej20 in there, reliably, as it is much more at home and has a huge aftermarket and user knowledge behind it. And our little imprezas are smaller and lighter that those bugeye guys too. Here in the Reno tahoe area, ive not seen anyone have a very long shelf life with one of those type turbo subys either. I sure have passed a plenty of them with my 150k ej18 NA going up winding old highway 40. Of course, it aint cheap neither, but engne swap arent. I myself am just rolling my pennies, canning and bottling, and just waiting until i finish nursing school and get to work to create my monster, the world will then be sorry. Until then ive concentrated on the stuff I can piece together with smaller funds: suspension from cooler models, brake swap, 86-ing those 14x5.5's, and other universal stuff. Another option thats cool but maybe less reliable is the EJ18t do it yourselfer, do a search, i found some guys doing obscene things to ej18s with some seeming success, as they tout the block as pretty darn strong, and there seems to be no wiring harness mess. you should just do an EJ series turbo swap...be it the EJ22G (legacy turbo) or a WRX of any form...

As for the topic at hand. Take a look at SubaChad's build in the AFI forum. He started out with boosting an EJ18, and then worked up to an EJ20 block with EJ22E heads. We did a similar build in Bugman's car recently. If you go with an E-manage, the wiring is much simpler than a full blown engine swap, and over time you can put in better and stronger engines with more boost. Far less limiting than say an EJ22T swap, which has an upper limit of around 230Chp, even with the additon of a custom intercooler... |
