Default CAIs, SRIs, and dynos

Given it equally applies to WRx, STis, and NAs, I thought I would open a little debate in this forum...didnt want to triplepost in the NA and FI forums .

There is one thing which bugs me about any dyno result showing hp/tq improvement due to a CAI. Any such testing involves the car fixed on the dyno with the RPM pushed till the redline. That in turn will create quite a massive heatsoak in the engine bay, thereby deteriorating results for any intake which picks up air from there, and almost making a hoodscoop useless. I'd suspect that even the inner fender area will get equally warm - after all, there is no ventilation. Stock intake will get hot, CAI will get hot, SRI will get even hotter, and the intercooler is close to useless...

Now, compare that to a real road scenario, say a track launch. Even at mid-rpms in your 1st gear, you will be doing 15 mph - enough for your intercooler to start doing something useful (100F in the engine bay vs 50F outside), for your engine bay to cool down a bit as opposed to a standstill, and for the inner fender area to be even significantly cooler - let alone if you're downshifting into 3rd on a freeway at 50mph.

My point: I would suspect the dyno numbers in each case will be a noticeable underestimate as compared to what the car will pull on the road - and SRIs are probably the most penalized .

I guess you missed the Dyno VS. Road tune debate going on in the Proven Power section. Should just put this in that thread.

accept for the fact, that you have giant fans on a dyno, blowing into the radiator and intercooler, in most cases at a higher velocity then driving would ever put into those areas.

Yep, and those fans in the pics above move enough air to blow you over.

I get my tuning done at Agile Auto and they sit one pointing directly at the front of the car (hood open) for the radiator and they have a modded STI splitter with a giant fan the bungy to the intercooler.

With the hood being open the SRI is pulling most of its air from the shop. The heat from the engine is blown down.

Someone with a datalog on a dyno will be able to have a more useful post if they can show IAT....

I'm going to try. I'm leaving for L.A. Cali at 8am on the 20th....

Yeah, Hill does good work. Good guy too, tries really hard to make small talk and get you involved with the tuning process. And if you have any question he'll stop what hes doing to help you understand....

I have WRB WRX with gold wheels...keep an eye out for me...hahahah

Yea Protune with the AP. Besides the TBE I have on, I'm putting an inlet, afta maf and cobb sri on before the tune.
$250 an hour, will take about two hours I'm told.
Also $100 installed for the GM Boost solenoid.
They also recommended one step colder plugs which I did myself.
