Re-wiring the DCCD thumb control
I've been playing around with the DCCD lately, and have found that when you dial in your own settings it makes the car far more predictable, especially in inclement conditions (i.e. snow). But for all it's good, it is a bit akward to be reaching for the knob though when driving due to it's location, and the fact that it's a good idea to keep both hands on the wheel.
So I've been pondering the idea of re-locating the knob. My question is this. What would be involved in say, mounting a switch to the steering wheel so you can control it without ever moving your hands from the steering wheel? I know very little about how it's setup, but it looks to be nothing more than a potentiometer, which if I'm correct, should be nothing more than a simple extention. So is this idea feasible?

I took my thumbwheel switch apart becuase my ohm meter measurements were odd. Its more than a simple pot. There are two resistors, the pot, and a couple of SMD capacitors.
I've got a couple of bad pics I can email if you want. |

you can extend the wires. This is no problem at all - at least not electronically. Just make sure you get them back together in the the right order.
BUT if you want to mess around with your center diff you should get a controller that has active maps and TPS, brake and ebrake inputs. These active maps can all be explained and in doing so you'll find the car equally predictable. This is what the rally guys use. As far as I understand the auto STI map is not clear to understand. In acny case I don't see what gains you are going to get by locating the switch somewhere else. Is the gear shift in the wrong place too? -Andy |
