Default Exedy Stage1 clutch kit owners, questions for you all!

Alright, I called the tech line at Exedy, and they told me that its normal to have Harmonic Noise from the performance clutch.

My question, who is running an Exedy Stage1 clutch and do you hear anything different than OEM? Do you have different sound over the OEM clutch you had? The reason is because I am having a grinding noise in acceleration and deceleration in 1-2-3... and I have a brand new transmission, and we are suspecting the clutch to be deffect...

Owners of stage1 clutch, please chime in!! Need your help!

I have a deceleration noise, and thats it. There is a long lengthy thread on the topic with no real concrete evidence as to why.

I have act street organic. Comparable to the exedy stage 1. I also installed a streetlight flywheel. I hear a harmonic grinding type noise at no load and decel around 2500-3500 rpm. Not sure if this helps. I understand this is due to the lightweight flywheel.

I put in the Exedy Stage 1 clutch back in January. I haven't had any problems with it so far...noise or otherwise.

I have the stage 1 with lightweight flywheel, i get some grinding noise in 3rd and 4th but only when i let off the gas and coast... i was told and have read around and it seems to be normal, try raising the PSI in the front 2 tires by 4psi and see if that helps at all

Default exedy stage 1 organic

I had one put in 1 yr ago. no issues, don't notice any noise. I didn't think that the stage one was an aggressive clutch, just a little more beef from the OEM. other than inital grab when it was new, have not noticed a huge difference. my point of putting it in was to avoid slippage with out hurting the gears......

The harmonic vibrations are generated by the power delivery to the crankshaft which causes the crank throws to twist and untwist. Normally these vibrations in the crankshaft are dampened by two things before being transmitted to the gear shafts: flywheel & clutch inertia, and clutch hub springs.

When you reduce the dampening of these vibrations they are more severely transmitted to the gears. The noise originates in the gear backlash so the type of loading on the gears will affect the noise level (as will probably temperature and the condition of the gear teeth).

The Exedy clutch has stiffer hub springs compared to stock so it will do less to dampen the noise. But in our experience the flywheel mass has the biggest effect. The noise is not normally very noticeable with a stock flywheel.

I just installed an Exedy lightweight flywheel and Exedy stage 1 HD clutch as well as a group N transmission mount. The transmission was refilled with Scotty's cocktail.
I'm still well inside the break in period but I can't say I hear anything different. The clutch engages wickedly soon instead of nearly up (old clutch was toast) but I still need to perform the clutch adjustment. I thought that perhaps there would be some additional noise with the tranny mount change but really the car just feels more solid. It was amazing how flexible the stock one was after 270,000 kms

EDIT: Drove to work this morning. It sounds like I've got rocks in the transmission when I let off the gas in gear. My theory is that it's either the gear/bearings in the center diff case or the throwout bearing. I'm going to go through the clutch adjustment procedure tonight and see if that helps.

^---This is the same thing that's happening to me after installing the Exedy HD and ACT StreetLite flywheel.
Please let me know if the clutch adjustment does anything to help.

I hear a light griding in the 2k-3k RPM range under decelleration while the clutch is still engaged with transmission in gear. If I put it in neutral and coast it is silent. This is mostly in 3rd gear, but very slightly noticeable in 2nd.

I actually notice this rock grinding noise on my stock 2004 wrx. It is very faint but it is there when everything is dead silent outside I can notice it mainly is second gear when you coast in the 2k-3k range also.

I've just recently installed a 2.5 hybrid, Group-N engine and tranny mounts, subframe hanger mounts and a new KSB03 Exedy OE replacement clutch kit. SAME NOISE. This clutch has heavier single coil springs, instead of the Subaru one which has two lighter springs. I'm pretty convinced its the clutch. Exedy rep is trying to blame the fact that I had the flywheel resurfaced. (Engages fine, was very little wear, so very little material was removed). Sounds like gravel in the tranny when engine braking in 3 and 4th gears.

BTW, the sound is really bad if I apply throttle so that its not engine braking, but more of a neutral force on the drivetrain (so that there is no load).

Edit: '05 wagon

I'm not happy.

how's everybody's Exedy Stage 1 holding up?

i installed mine last summer. still on the factory flywheel. it wasn't too long after that i started getting noises from the clutch area including the nasty, tight vibrations. only way i can explain it is like.. when depressing the pedal and the clutch disc is free, imagine the clutch disc spin off-axis. it basically feels like something got loose. i've had just the basic Exedy kits before with no issues, ever. after first having that experience, i saw a few people on rs25 with the same issues. in fact, one of them had the Stage 1 kit, twice, and both times, they completely failed on him. i'm about to replace my tranny and am really considering getting a base kit. but funds are low. we'll see when i inspect the Stage 1 kit.

OK, I wanted to comment because this is the exact thing that was freaking me out before I bought the new clutch I am breaking in. I went South Bend, stage I kit, they re-worked a stock flywheel(minimally) and I must say, I don't have a single bit of noise, period. South Bends stage I is an Exedy KB203 replacement that has had the contact surfaces of the disc beefed up a little to hold up to 315 tq. It also has a 33% more clamping force in the pressure plate. But none the less, it still is a single sprung disc instead of double sprung(4 springs instead of 4 springs with 4 littler springs inside, which was how the stock clutch disc) and I still dont get any noise.

I did not use Scotty's cocktail, and I am not knocking it because I haven't tried it, but I actually went 3 quarts Amsoil Severe Gear and .8 quarts Amsoil Synchromesh. I still got the upgraded feel of being able to put my car into first gear while still rolling up to or around 22 ish mph. Everything shifts like butter, although I did not any grinding to begin with, even on my 175k original stock 5-speed, It still improved the whole feel tremendously.

Its the ungodly number of posts just like this that kept me from doing a few things. Buying a light weight flywheel was absolutely the number one thing I would not do! Noise, deceleration chatter, possible code thrown etc. Also I did not want to buy an ACT clutch kit, or SPEC(because their parts are garbage), or anyone else but Exedy. When I discovered South Bend and spoke with them, I knew that was where to go!

Exedy parts, which we all know works perfect, that they then beef up the contact surfaces on the clutch disc to withstand up to 315 torque and meticulously go back through the kit and make sure every piece is proper, the actual right pieces are included, and ship it out. The only downside was I had to buy another slightly used Flywheel and pay the 15 bucks to ship it to them. When South Bend does a resurface on a flywheel, whatever they take off the flywheel in thickness, they add to the clutch disc to make up for it. And just for an idea, I used a flywheel that had right at 50k or so. The stock flywheel weighs 22 pounds, I thick it can handle having hundredths of an inch shaved off...seriously..... **** light weight flywheels! Why? You have to rev the car more for the inertia of it all which in the end just burns more gas, and isn't anywhere near the parameters meant for the tranny initially.

So, for all you guys reading this thread, like I read so many others before buying a clutch, contact Andy, or really any of the guys, with a simple phone call and talk to them and see why they are the difference. I read one time the South Bend was a hidden jewel in the Subaru community, and couldn't agree more! I got the feel of a not so stock clutch, as far as the peddle, with the reliability of Exedy parts, oem flywheel etc. So, just wanted to comment because I was worried about having problems like the noise and "rocks" sounds, I am a high stress anxious guy sometimes.....but my S.B. clutch is flawless and perfect!

By the way, this is what it cost me. And I have a stock flywheel with around 80k if anyone needs to buy one. 90 shipped. can ship today!

Used flywheel from a member on here - 90 bucks. 75+shipping(flat rate box 15 bucks)
South Bend Stage I clutch kit+flywheel resurfacing+shipped back to me - 375 even.
Labor for the install - 250.

total 725. So If your going to do it yourself, and have a good flywheel on your car that isn't warped(making a stuttering feeling when leaving in first gear form a dead stop), then you could have this great companies clutch kit for 375 shipped to you. Hope this info helps someone.

And to repeat, I have zero noise in deceleration and most certainly no "rocks in the tranny" noises! Couldn't be happier.

I swapped a brand new 07 sti Trans into my car and went with the Exedy stage 1 HD and the light weight fly wheel. I deleted the clutch delay valve and adjusted the rod on the master and it grabs nice and close to the floor. Other then a bit of chatter (only have like 200 miles on it) the clutch is great EXCEPT for the HORRIBLE Harmonic noises from the fly wheel. I am truly pissed I spent 300$ on this. I should have checked here before buying. I really want to swap it out for a stock fly wheel. I would not recommend anything other then the stock fly wheel after hearing the noises this thing makes. It's worst with the AC on and bad in general if you coast in gear. Definitely not happy

Default Still same problem

I have exactly the same problems with really bad 'harmonic noise' when coasting without gas in 2, 3, 4th gears.

Also have problem that since fitted the initial problem was really bad judder and high biting point. Drive it for 500 miles was the technical answer.

Driven 250 miles and the judder is going, but the biting point is few mm from the top of the travel + I have this harmonic noise on deceleration....

The truthful Exedy advert should be something like... 'stronger springs and friction material handle more power but you will sound like a cement mixer if you use lightened flywheel'.

Hope the 'Professional' company who fitted the clutch will sort out the problems as promised.....

I have a stock sti flywheel and clutch masters fx400 clutch and I have the rock crusher grinding noise coasting in gear. Seems to me all clutches have this noise but is louder or quieter depending on the clutch and flywheel. Mine isn't too loud, to the point I don't really notice it.

My stock wrx clutch and flywheel had the noise but was close to silent. So I think all of them have it.

Crap pilot bearing... My best guess, I'm not willing to go through all the trouble to put my SPEC 2+ back in after removing it for the "rock crusher" sound it gave me right out the box... (Serious rock crushing)

But when I pulled it, with under 100mi on it, I found this..

one dry spot on the face, above the Exedy..

I wasn't willing to accept that it was "normal" so I put a different clutch in and while I still have the noise, it's 100x quieter... Than this..

You guys do realize that when you are sitting in your car that the center diff/output shaft of the tranny sits right in front of where your shifter is... The heavier stock flywheel has more inertia so it has an effect on the backlash of the gears and front diff. Put a lighter flywheel in there and now there is less inertia and the backlash some how moves around more causing more noise? Then, along with the single spring instead of the double spring design that just adds to it.

Is that why my first (second actual) and third(4th actual) clutch on the SAME LWFW made ZERO noise and the second(3rd actual) one was like installing a rock crusher....(so yeah, 4 different clutches on the SAME LWFW)

I don't believe it...
