Still waiting on my upper from LaRue, been half a month so I'm not sure if that's normal or not. Heading to the range soon, be the last time to get to shoot my own stuff before I leave for a year. Probably be given a p229 or 92f that I'll never get range time on while I'm OCONUS

Thinking about hittin top gun on saturday. Anyone interested? FMJ ammo is banned now so your AR is probably useless out there unless you have some HP or SP ammo.

I think I may go out there Saturday morning when they open. I didn't get out there last weekend and I don't want to miss this nice weather.

Morning isn't what I would consider nice weather... it'll be in the 30's. Supposed to get up around 60. I was thinking about noon.

Banned at the range. It's a quite common practice, as it doesn't deform or fragment like soft point, polymer-tipped, or hollow point bullets, so it could ricochet and keep going somewhere you don't want it to.

That reminds me. I need to get my own steel. Think I'm gonna pick up the hostage one from ActionTargets. Cause who doesn't want to save a hostage from 500 yds away.

Is this a Top Gun thing or a rifle thing? Every time I've done my CHL they always say bring only FMJ ammo.

Rifle. Doesn't really matter with handgun ammo, since the effective range is relatively short.

But an FMJ 308 will go for a long, long time.

Truth be told it's mostly to stop the idiots with "black guns". Bolt gun shooters generally don't shoot FMJ anyway since it's less accurate. Ranges say its because of ricochets and the potential for it to spark a fire. I think it's more to cut down on the number of black guns out there since shooting OTM is way more expensive. Those rounds are usually heavier which means they are slower and FAR less likely to damage steel targets. Light FMJ rounds will pierce 1/2 non hardened steel at 300 yds easily. Hardened steel isn't cheap. Having some bozo out there with super hot ammo is an easy way to ruin it.

That said there are still some folks with precision ARs that I see out there quite often. I always thought the range fee of $20 and the distance from the metroplex would keep some traffic down but it still got pretty busy some days.

So what am I going to do with the case of FMJ .308 I got for the pea-shooter? Wait until March and then blow it all through the can at Gibson's?

I'll probably head to elm fork one of these days. I think they still allow FMJ.

Did I mention how much I hate the fact that nothing for AR308s is standardized like for AR15s? Because Jesus Christ, I bought a barrel nut for a buddy's gun that I'm fixing after he dicked up the barrel, and it fits the barrel perfectly. But it's longer than the one it replaced, so it won't fit the handguard that he wanted to use, since all companies use different barrel nuts for their handguards.

And now I'm searching for one that will work, but everybody is either sold out or can't give me an idea of what they have that will work, because nothing is the goddamn same. So if it doesn't fit, I'm going to have to buy a free float tube, which he isn't so happy about, just to get it in good firing order again before continuing to have to source a barrel nut that will work with the delta ring he has.

RAAAAGGGGHHHHRRRRR. Makes me want to punch some kittens.

NINJA EDIT: Elm Fork does allow FMJ. But not for pistol in their covered shooting area, strange enough.

I find somewhat easier time verifying things will work my DPMS AP4 LR-308. I guess they were very popular a few years back so several others standardized with them....
It was still annoying when I had to buy my own barrel nut tool for the smith to be able to work on it when I first got it

This is actually a DPMS LR308 platform rifle. It just seems that even though a lot of the peripheral parts are SUPPOSED to work for it, they're not all an exact fit. The example is the barrel nut from Fulton Armory. It's from their Titan line, which is based on DMPS, so it should fit, but it's a quarter inch too long for the delta assembly.

I ordered a DPMS vented float tube. It's a 16" Rainier-barreled rifle with a mid length system, so I'm just going to toss on a low profile gas block and drop that free float tube over it. The guy has a massive scope on the gun and doesn't care about iron sights. His sling is mounted on the A2 stock, so it's not like it's going to be inconvenient for him. It'll just be different than it was.

So my local sheriff just made national news by stating that he won't enforce any new gun laws on the residents of Collin County, regardless of whether or not they're passed by our federal legislature. He's always seemed like a pretty decent sheriff who has always worked with me on any of my own Class 3 items or firearm questions in my business dealings as an FFL.

Does anyone know the typical build time on an order from LaRue? My upper order has been in "Gun Room" status for about a month now and I was really hoping to get to look at it before I left for a year.
