Actually, the two DC snipers used a Bushmaster AR15.

Just about finished building my SIG and looking to move on to a longer range rifle. I have a HK91 that I was thinking of building into a .308 600-700m platform but now I am having second thoughts as i price out replacement parts to make it shoot well (MOA) at that range.

What do you guys think? Build the HK or look at something else?

*looking for a semi-auto "precision" guy for mid distance. NOT 5.56 as I need knocking down power at that range. Budget is ~1K to 1.5K without glass.

It's been a while since I had my HK91 but I recall 15 years ago you had no choice but to look for PSG-1 and MSG-90 take-offs which were $$$. Now with the PTR-91 clones patterned on the actual H&K schematics there are probably a few more options. On its own it should be pretty damn accurate, though a new barrel may be in order if it has a lot of rounds through it. What does it shoot like now at 100 yards?

A new barrel could set you back about $1k for one of the nice 26" P5 barrels. That could do lots for your accuracy as the action should otherwise be pretty solid. Mine had thousands of rounds through it when I bought it and I didn't have to smith the action at all. It's personal preference on the stock and grip but the PSG-1 stuff is probably another $1k for the trigger group with the nice wooden grip (which I would absolutely love on my Savage 110 BA) and the adjustable trigger stop. I think you can get the grip alone for less than $500 though. Magpul makes a PRS that works on the HK that's not too pricey and would give you some length and cheek adjustments.

Or you can sell it to me and start over. BTW I do have a spare cocking tube for an HK91 that I found when cleaning out the gun safe up north. It's just sitting around so if you need one let me know.

Garrett, I forgot to mention to you that one of my customers has an H&K 91 that he's looking to sell. Not sure if you're in the market for one, but he's a reasonable guy and one of my best customers, so he won't F you in the A on the price.

Thanks Navvie. That was the basic plan right now, new barrel with a wilson trigger, prs stock, some sort of rail and scope. I have a bipod and such. But looking to drop around 2k into it to get it to shoot 'well'. Not sure its worth it to build or just get a nice ar-10 platform new for around the same money and use the hk as a bush gun. I will have to think about it.

Might as well buy an OBR at that point.

My preference for a precision semi-auto would be roller delayed blowback over direct gas impingement. But if you're going to switch then go with something like an M1A, not an AR.

So gun experts, give me some insight in to the Ruger Scout rifle. They've started offering it in left handed now.

Is the gun just a toy or does it work for hunting and such? (seeing as it only has a 16in barrel)

I don't think you could really label anything in .308 a "toy." It's essentially Ruger's take on an M1A SOCOM. I haven't heard much about it, because most people I know who are looking for a more tactical 308 CQB rifle go with M1As. But I know there aren't a lot of them out there.

Based on my experience with 16" SOCOMs, it should be just fine for hunting. You lose some overall distance and velocity, but you probably aren't planning on hunting grizzly bears at 800 yards, so I think you should be fine. I've never had an issue hunting with 16" rifles, including 16" AR308s.

The Ruger Scout is a bolt so I don't think it would be a variant of the M1A. It's a variant of the other Scout rifles like the Steyr and Savage. They're great brush guns since they're light, compact, and the forward-mounted rail makes target acquisition faster. It isn't meant for a high-power scope because of the longer eye relief but can be used with pretty much any CQB optic. The short barrel also makes a great suppressor host, and I think both the Savage and Ruger models are factory threaded.

I think they're neat. I would certainly own one if I needed a lightweight deer or hog gun for hunting within 500 yards.

I know it's a bolt, which is why is said it was their "take on it."

It still has many of the same features, such as CQB optic rail, same style of weapon, and same profile, but isn't semiauto. It's a cool gun, for sure. I was just saying that it's in the same vein as an M1A.

I'd love an M1A, but I'm just not a fan of all the brass and cordite I end up with in my face.

Disregarding the larger capacity box magazine, would I still be better served by a savage weather warrior?

Oh and sorry if my questions are dumb and annoying, just trying to learn what I can.

It's a bigger rifle, but unfortunately Savage doesn't make its Scout for lefties. Still going to be an accurate rifle out of the box.

This was true 20 years ago, less so 10 years ago, but not at all now.

The advantage to the PSG-1/MSG-1 was the polygonal barrel, but it's easy to get a polygonal barrel for an AR-10/DPMS pattern gun now. A precision trigger is $200 out of the box, and can be installed by anyone. Also, changing barrels in G3- and FAL-pattern guns requires a press and expertise.

Knights, Larue, and LMT(+Barrel) 308 gas guns are years ahead of any HK roller design. Having to keep spare rollers of various diameter around to adjust for headspace changes over the life of a barrel should. I don't think H&K switched to a gas gun in the 417 just to have something put as a line item on a gov't contact bid.

On the M1A, they again are tougher to rebarrel, the gas systems aren't easily adjustable (I have two with the Schuster plugs) between suppressed or not. And the op rods are fragile. Having to bed teh McMillan stocks suck, and the other rigid stocks are heavy.

If I was gonna spend $1K on a gun I'd get a Savage bolt gun.
$2K, i'd get a DPMS and rebarrel.
$3K, LMT and rebarrel,
$3.5-4K, Larue or Knights (and piss off bolt guys with how accurate they can be)

Ones I own (or have owned) as a point of reference for all my BS above:
HK91 + Magpul PRS + trigger job + B&T mount and Leupold glass (oh, and the f'n charging handle is always in the way)
HK91 + HK claw mnt + 4x Leupy (sure, that claw mnt is straight... trust me)
M1A nm + Bedded wood stock + Smith Ent mnt + Leupy
M1A + Sage stock + reversed larue mnt + Leupy + Gemtech quickmnt
M1A + Troy MCS chassis + larue + Leupy + Gemtech quickmnt
DPMS LR308 + larue + NightForce
Larue OBR + Nightforce
Rem 700 PSS + AICS chassis + Leupy
FN Patrol Bolt + Leupy + Gemtech tensioning mnt

If I don't sell the DPMS first, I'm gonna get some polygonal barrel awesomeness for it, maybe in .260 Rem.
