I drive a 17 WRX and i have heard a lot about the carbon buildup, I brought it in for service (top engine cleaning) at around 16k before seeing any problems. Sadly that caused the problems i was trying to avoid (jumpy idle, running rough) but that eventually cleared up after having them reset the idle. It's at 24k now and I don't see anything going wrong yet, but i often worry about the rediculous amount of buildup that i have to clean from the muffler tips just on a weekly basis. I have an AOS from Crawford (not installed, heard mixed reviews) and I'm interested in looking into the EGR deletes. I'm curious, I thought that was an emissions controlling device, wouldn't that be illegal to remove? (Possibly fail inspection later on). I bought this car over the STI thinking i would try out the newer technology, but now i see it's quite a hassle just to maintain these things.

Almost 32,000 miles on my 17 WRX. Never cleaned them once. I'll have to get before and after pics.

If I don't want to go the tgv/egr delete route, how much of a benefit would just an AOS + protune be? Or is the best "longer times between walnut blasting" solution be the deletes & tune + AOS?

Noob Question:
Why do you actually have to "delete" the EGR? Why not just unplug it and leave it installed?

I know walnut blast is a sure way of making your valves like new again but here is an alternative I stumbled across. Kit looks top notch and sure it's more than the subaru one.

BUMP!... has anyone tried this approach on cleaning the valves??? I just spoke with a shop locally (found via bgprod.com) and the advisor said it cleans like walnut blasting but difference is the "chemicals" used.

Just got mine done at 62k. 55k miles were stock. 7k miles were "Stage 2" with EGR/TGV deletes. Spark plugs were replaced at the same time. Combined, the car seems to idle and cruise a little quieter/smoother. No huge differences I can tell from daily driving. Pics are attached, may be waiting approval or something

Dumb question but would walnut blasting help the amount of carbon i see in my exhaust tips? They were pretty much black a month ago and i cleaned them and polished them but they're looking black again and i have new spots of carbon on my garage floor right behind my exhaust.

My AF Learning 1 also showed a -25.6 or something along those lines yesterday so maybe i'm running rich?

2015 WRX
43k Miles
Cobb Stage 1 91 Octane tune & Factory SPT Exhaust. Other than that, completely stock.

Walnut blasting is used to clean the backside of the intake valves, getting the airflow back to as originally designed. Nothing to do with carbon on exhaust tips.

Does anyone have a TGV delete that could measure the length and width of each cylinder? I'd like to make up a jig ahead of time

Thanks man, i was thinking there was so much carbon in my intake valves that it was almost "carrying over" to the back side of my exhaust.

I owned a 2008 Audi RS4 for several years and cleaned the valves myself several times. Then I gave up dealing with it and sold my iconic RS4. It was a shame. Early Audi direct-injected cars were the eye-opening examples of carbon build-up and the cons of DI. Google "RS4 cabon buildup" for images. That being said, I can see why the SOA replies to concerned DIT owners seem to say that Subaru is confident that their DI technology is better. I've looked at the "before" photos of the dirty FA2.0DIT valves and they are NOTHING like VW /Audi /Porsche valves. If that is what my 2018 WRX valves look like eventually, I will not be so concerned as to spend $400 or whatever to have them look new again. It's not worth it. It won't take 12,000 miles for them to look dirty again. Just another opinion. If carbon chunks fall off and can it can be proven that those chunks scored the piston walls (like with 2008 Audi's), then I will be concerned.

I am glad someone said it. I was all worried about my intake valves after seeing pictures after just 30k miles. After researching it and seeing more issues post cleaning Im going to pass on it. Got my EGR/TGV deletes and a catch can on at 40K miles so hopefully it should be a non issue until I decide to build internals.

All Aspects are the guys that tuned my FA wrx, and they did a great job with it! I'm going back in October to get tuned for some more parts including methanol injection since they recommended it the whole time for the reasons Unabomber stated. The only thing I'm really on the fence about is weather or not to reinstall my TGV/ EGR systems to not throw check engine codes, but at the same time I really don't want that nasty EGR to be gumming up my intake tract. I know that the water/ meth mix will help clean it to some extent, but I don't think its a better idea than just leaving it out and biting the dirty dash bullet. If there are any opinions or ideas from anyone smarter/ more experienced than me, I would really appreciate the information!
