Question electronic police gauge

i dont know if this is where this is supposed to be but here it goes.

i heard from a guy that there is some sort of a gauge that will tell you how far or how close a police car is near you. it has a range of about 5 miles or less. it somewhat has a meter that show 1-10. as a cop car is closer the number get smaller.

here is the question. is there such a product out there or is this someone BSing?

Uniden BCT-12 "Beartracker". It is a radio scanner and if a cop is using a certain type of radio it will tell you the signal strength and beep. They do not make them anymore, and IIRC its illegal in most states and others you need a HAM license to operate a scanner.
