Audi E-tron
The German car manufacturer Audi has shown its second all-electric drive at the first major auto show of 2010 in Detriot. The new E-tron is 3.93 meter (154.72 in) long, 1.78 meter (70.08 in) wide and just 1.22 meter (48.03 in). The two-seater weighs only 1,350 kilograms (2976.24lb) and has an ASF-design aluminum body.
The vehicle uses the same setup where four electric motors are connected to each wheel. Its “torque vectoring” is the key to a thrilling level of active precision and excellent traction. 0 to 100km/h (62mph) is done in just 5.9 seconds. The Audi e-tron accomplishes a sprint from 60 to 120km/h (37.28 – 74.56mph) in a mere 5.1 seconds. The vehicle is limited to 200km/h (124mph). The lithium-ion batteries are located behind the passenger compartment and ahead of the rear axle. They make an effective energy content of 45 kilowatt-hours available, creating an operating range of up to 250 kilometers (155.34 miles) realistically possible. Wheels are 19-inch size with a 35-spoke design, 235/35 tyres up front and 255/35 tyres at the rear. Audi again uses the same setup regarding the componentes: a heat pump as an efficient means of heating up and maintaining the interior temperature. The drive system, power electronics and battery have a thermal management – crucial for maintaining a high operating range coupled with the correct interior comfort.

I love it, the only thing I would change on the style is to soften up the rear wheel fenders a little...overall beautiful car!

What's truly amazing is that in 3 quick revisions they've managed to remove 550lbs from the car.
Word is that the styling of the concept may show up in a production R4 (baby R8) model... From Autoblog Green Quote:

I stopped paying attention to concept cars when I was 9 and realized they will never see the light of day.
So much promised technology...never makes it on to the showroom floor. Expect a less exciting, more mundane model in 2012. |

sometimes they do make it. The Viper was changed very little from Concept to production.

I still would rather have a PHEV version than EV. EVs are city cars and cars like this just don't fit the city car mold, they desire to be driven long distances on curvy mountain roads.

Umm having a separate motor "to each wheel" doesn't mean unsprung weight. Having in wheel motors does.

My bad, i assumed they meant wheel motors since it seems to be the trend for 4wd electric concepts. Looking at some of the press photos i can clearly see conventional brakes, however, so it does look like the motors are mounted inboard. That's good.

I like the shape of that coupe. Those wheels are ugly though.. but wheels are easy to swap.

not bad looking. base price of 75k. I think I would rather have a an SQ5, for 20k less monies, it will go faster, go farther, hold its value better, handle better and sound better.
OR you could go with the LOADED Q8 which is accelerates just as quickly, same price and will go farther, hold its value better, handle better an...you get the picture. But if you want to pay more for less, then by all means. This car makes no sense. |

This seems to be for people who think Tesla's are not exclusive enough. On the other hand, the combination of German luxury + electric undoubtedly means these will be a screaming deal in a few years after the jaw dropping depreciation occurs... |

German luxury + electric (drivetrain) = mogwai + water. If the Japanese ever got into this segment, they would own it despite their questionable exterior design language (Toyota/Honda). Ah, but it's about the badges...

A base price or $75k seems way too steep but I'm sure people will buy them. For the money, I'd be looking at a Macan Turbo. |
