Default Which cold air intakes work with what FMICs?

In the future after my warranty mileage runs out, I plan to buy a Front mount intercooler.

I'm looking at buying a new intake system, and not sure if I should go with a cold air intake, or a short pod.

I realize that cold air intakes verses short pods are basically preference as nobody has any hard evidence that a cold air intake actually produces a better gain over the short pod.

I basically need to know is if I buy say an AEM cold air intake, will I have to ditch it if I get a FMIC in the future.

Second concern, sound. Which is louder, Short pod, or cold air? I've heard the AEM cold air on a car and the spooling sound is louder than my resonator removal setup. But it's not like really loud. What does a short pod sound like?

Lastly, is it a fact that the Blitz SUS filter can actually flow more CFM than the K&N filter? I heard the SUS filter doesn't filter as well because of this. Regardless, I will want the filter that flows more.

Default I have the AEM CAI and

Cobb (APS) front mount. Don't have the front mount in yet, but know it will fit with an Injen CAI, and the Injen and AEM look almost exactly the same. There's a picture of the Injen CAI and Cobb FMIC at www.indyimport.com Go to galleries, Subaru, Phil Swetpikhuls (spelling?) car.

The Cobb unit is a little out of my price range, i'm wondering if something to the likes of the Greddy or Blitz front mounts will work?

Default I guess if you're willing to cut the

bumper to save bucks, go for it. I guess the plus is that you might save some weight. I personally think that there are a lot of FMICs for the WRX that aren't designed for the WRX, rather, they'll fit if you modify the car so the intercooler will fit. I like the Cobb (APS) because their FMIC is designed for the WRX, instead of modifying the WRX to make a FMIC fit. Make sense? Opinions vary. I can understand saving bucks. If it weren't for credit, I'd have nothing.

Hah, I didn't realize you had to do all that hacking to get the Blitz/Greddy to fit. So the Cobb unit drops in without any problems? No cutting? Can you keep your foglamps as well? I really didn't like that you had to ditch your fogs for the Blitz FMIC.

with the aps/cobb you lose the fogs, and its $1600, plus an intake ($250). no cutting though, silicon hoses.

MRT FMIC: Little cutting, keep fogs, can use stock BOV, Larger surface area core than others, comes with intake, stainless piping, and all samco silicon connectors and hoses. use to be $1400. Need new smaller widthbattery for piping to fit ($80).

GREDDY FMIC: $1000, plus intake ($100), plus bov, cut more, taller core, alum piping, lose fogs.

BLITZ FMIC: $1000, plus intake ($225), lots of cutting, taller core, need bov ($250), need bov flange welded on ($25) and lose fogs.

So it depends on what things are important to you when choosing a FMIC.

I chose the MRT after much research and comparison.

I heard there were ways to possibly modify the bumper so you can keep your foglights with the MRT, is this possible? If so, I think i'll lean towards the MRT. Can you use a cold air intake with it as well?

Yes as mentioned above the MRT kit lets you keep the fogs, no mods neccesary its a standard feature of the kit.

I wouldnt waste the extra money on the coldair and use the ram intake setup the include with the kit.

I've read that you can keep the fogs with the Cobb, but you have to move them up some (don't know how much yet) and make a bracket. And you do have to cut some plastic with the Cobb. If you check the dimensions, the Cobb is huge. Remember, you have to take a look at total cubic capacity. I know the Blitz goes up in the bumper where it'll never see air. The Cobb is fully exposed. Also check the pressure drop of the various intercoolers. My Cobb was $1500.

i like the aps cobb fmic,because, like someone else said you can use a coldair intake with it,you dont have to chop the bumper up.im not worried about the price of the fmic,i just heard its not the best i/c to run with a t3/t04 hybrid turbo.

Ok, does anybody know for a fact that the APS front mount WILL work with an AEM cold air intake?

Lastly, which intake is typically louder, a pod style or a cold air style? Thanks!

I have personally seen a Cobb FMIC and I must say the thing weighs a TON. You don't need a bumper reinforment if that thing has any kind of decent mounting. It has awesome hoses though (all silicon I believe). The IC only fills the space below the bumper reinforcement (the blacked out section of the bumper), so it isn't that big but it only puts IC surface where it'll do the most good. I would think this core is for a bit lower HP capabilities (just an observation not a proven fact, but I think it'd still handle 350 ATW or more).
The MRT uses a different kind of core that isn't quite as effective at transferring heat as far as I recall but it flows to the radiator very well. The piping is stainless, but very long and you have the issue of the battery. Some people just ended up remote mounting an Optima after trying to make it fit. It's nice they send you a fitting intake but I don't want one because I already had one but you can't get it without.
The Greddy is nice (I've seen them for Supras and had two for DSM's) but I think they're kinda scarce right now. Good cores.
I just ordered a Blitz, so I personally chose the pros/cons of it. I will just weld on a flange for the HKS SSQBOV. I think using the WRX specific kit would look kinda silly on there with the extension piece. The generic HKS BOV is cheaper and you still need an aluminum flange (which HKS can sell you). BTW, you don't need a Blitz SUS to have a Blitz FMIC. I have seen the piping and it looks like the easiest to get a short ram to work with. Look up the pics posted around. I have an MRT intake that I'll use with it. I think the K&N will work as well.
I will probably try to make and sell a C/F cold air box with an HKS Super Mega Flow under Quantum Racing. I think that would be the best.
Regarding fogs, I want them gone anyways. I will get a solid cover for the driver's side one and make a scoop for the passenger side one to go to the cold air box.

Slightly off topic I know but...

The AVO FMIC for pre-MY01 cars allowed you to retain fog lights and battery, post-MY01 I'm not sure but I imagine the crash bar would present a problem.

I've always found the AVO upgrade top mount intercooler perfectly adequate for street use, race/drag is of course another issue.

The GReddy kit and MRT kit require similar amounts of cutting.

The Blitz requries a tad more....all leave you with not much bumper support left.
