helping a friend, question on 92 legacy trans. fluid fill location
the car is supposedly a 1992 legacy, fwd, automatic. a friend of mine helped somone out by putting transmission fluid in the car for them. now they claim there is a serious problem with the car and my friend is to blame, so he called me.
i'm not knowledgeable on old legacies, so i need your help. My friend says he poured the fluid into a location similar to where the filler is on my wrx (passenger side, near the firewall). Sounds correct to me. The owner is claiming he put fluid into a "differential fluid valve" instead of the transmission, and now the "engine is shaking" I waved the BS flag, and told my friend not to worry, he wasnt responsible for anything. The owner of the car bought the trans fluid, and my friend only put 3/4 of a bottle in it. What I like best is the owner of the car cant even figure out where to put transmission fluid in the car, but they can correctly diagnose a problem with it. Any help, re-assurance is greatly appreciated. Mark |

by right side do you mean passenger side? or, if your standing in front of the car, it would be on your right? He said the handle was a round loop.
I didnt think there was a seperate filler for differential fluid. Do you think 3/4 of a bottle of atf would do any damage? mark |

ATF is on driver side.
it too has a yellow loop handle. yes, drain the front diff - you need a 21mm socket and roughly 1.7 qts of 80w-90 gear lube. use a transmission funnel! |

thanks everyone for the replies, and thanks ciper for the link.
i have informed my friend he (or better yet someone else) should drain the front diff fluid and fill it with the correct oil. i have also informed him to always check the instructions on any car before adding any fluids to it, and to never work on a car in the dark. thanks again mark |
