What kind of snow chains to get?
I searched and there's nothing on this ANYWHERE!! So what is the difference between a sweet set of chains and the crappy $19.99 special you get at Wal-Mart? Where can I get some sweet chains for my car? Preferably soon too cuz I want to head up to Tahoe tonite or early tomorrow morning and hit the fresh 3 feet of BOOM POW!!!!!!! I'm getting a boner just thinking about it.....

chains
The most important thing to make sure when picking out a set is that it has an "S" class rating. This will ensure proper clearance to prevent damage of your car. Most all of these I believe will be of a cable design. Next I would recommend the Security Z-Cables. It uses a zig-zag pattern so that you can actually use the benefits of ABS in the snow. It has something to do with the fact it has part of the cable in contact with the ground at all times unlike the traditional ladder style you find for 19.99. You also do not have to drive up onto these to install them. So far my only personal experience with these are on a van, so I can't tell you how easy they are on this car. Who all carries these I do not know. We carry them at the store I work at and they retail for 59.95. If you are in the San Jose area it is called All Parts Auto.

You won't need chains unless you've swapped out the stock M/S rated tires with something non-M/S rated. If I remember correctly, the only time AWD vehicles need chains is during level 3 chain control and you don't want to drive in that condition.

Eeyore is correct. If you need chains on your Subaru, avoid driving at all costs. They almost always close the roads before an R3 condition, but even if they don't, you do not want to be driving.
If you have 3 season performance tires on your car, get some winter tires if there is any possible way for you to afford it. |

Ok, so from what I'm reading, it's only necessary to have them in the front? I'll be driving through the pass in Idaho and Washington the end of December. Should I get 2 sets??? or just equip the fronts???
Thanks... |

Okay, I know that every time I went up to the mountains down in SoCal when it was snowing (doesn't snow much ) they would ALWAYS ask to see chains when they let you pass the checkpoint no matter who you were or what car you were in.
And by the way I do want to be dominating every one when it's R3 and they are sitting on their butts and I just keep on truckin. No need to post about how dangerous it can be, I know. |

Yeah, with AWD and chains on all tires you can drive right through snowbanks and pull out snowplows that got stuck!!!

I have Hakka 1s on 16x7 rims and carry Shuregrip Zs just in case when I go anywhere near snow. I don't ever expect to use the cables. |

whats the difference
I just got back from Medford Oregon via the I-5. I did not put the chains on nor were they reqired at the moment. It was snowing for about 7 miles of the trip. There are check points where you have to use them (condition is regulated by flashing lights)but I didnt have to mess with it. I bought some inexpensive 25 dollar Sears/cable deals.
I spoke with the sales fella at NAPA for a while and he was telling me about some higher priced ones for 127.00. I dont ski, I dont particually like any kind of winter sports and the most I will need these for will be to go over that same stretch of higway between Oregon and Calif. I would suggest getting some nice ones if you plan on some multiple uses. I imagine the wimpy cables/wires that I have would wear out rather soon. |

Is SZ331 the model number for the 205/55/16? I wanted to pick up a set but all they had were the 335's

Another alternative is the spikes-spider (www.spikes-spider.com). I actually have a set, but haven't had to use them in the last two years. It takes about 30 seconds to install and is suppose to work just as well as chains. You also don't have to worry about the wheelwell clearance.
However, it does cost a lot more than chains/cables. Not to mention the really ugly lock ring thing you have to put on your rims. -Eugene |

That explains those weird "decrotive covers" I see on cars from time to time.

I'd get spikes spiders if I had a front wheel drive car. But, the only reason for me to carry chains is to comply with the law and not to actually use them, I'd think it's way too expensive and ugly!
BTW, would running cables on only the front axle play havoc with your center differential? I guess not since the only time you'd have them on would be in very snowy/icy conditions... |
