Trading in 2010 WRX
Hey guys. So I wanted to get your guys' opinion on trading in my 2010 wrx premium for a 2008+ sti.
Has anyone had bad experiences doing a trade in for an STI? I feel like this could save me money due to having to pay less taxes on the sti compared to the route of selling my wrx and then buying the sti at full price. Note: I am still financed on the WRX, but I only bought it about 8 months ago so I am not very far into payments. After driving another's STI I just realized I really do like it a lot more than my WRX. Let me know what you guys think, maybe I should just be content with my car as is. Also I figured since the 2011 STI is coming soon maybe the hatchback sti's will be easier to bargain for? Appreciate it

I'm looking to do the same thing. I owe under 8K on my '09 and am looking to purchase a '11 STi. I did a track day once and realized that even doing a few track events a year would justify the STi.

Nice, yea I have met a bunch of guys who like to do track days and I'd like to be able to get into that. I guess its just a matter of seeing if the dealer will give me a fair deal.
You said 2011 sti, so do you want the sedan? |

Hmm, well I currently have 6k miles on it. Its basically brand spanking new. But I definitely see your point. I mean nada and blue book appraisals say I would lose about 2 thousand from its private party value. I'd be willing to take that hit for a sti. But maybe thats just me. My biggest issue is basically finding one is impossible.

Why not upgrade your WRX, save some insurance money and you could mod up to beat the Sti perhaps? Just a thought.... if it's at all possible. Plus, cops won't be on the lookout for ya as much.

if you can afford it, trade the wrx in and get an 11 only if you want the sedan. since the sti sedan wasn't offered before 11, it would be an easy excuse as to why you made such a financially poor decision to ditch "new" car for another "new" car so soon.

Well after doing some math and looking at possible prices. The current value of my wrx vs the current financed loan amount puts me upside down. Which was fine, but to go to an 2008+ STI I'd have to finance that and it just wouldn't work out.
What I think I would do though, is trade in for a 2006 STI which has about 42k miles on it. What I am worried about though is missing the interior of the new WRX. I don't know. I mean the WRX is supposed to be really fast but I have it in my head that the STI would be funner to go on the track with or whatever. Plus I want to be able to go hard on the transmission and the WRX scares me to do that. Does anyone here regret going from a 2009+ WRX down to a lower year STI? |

That being said, I wouldn't go from a 2010/2011 WRX to a 08-10 STi. The STi is more money, to run more expensive gas to have higher insurance for what seems like only a little bit in performance. Have you worked out what it would take to get your WRX up to par on the track? cost wise, it might be cheaper. |

Well I mean, how are tranny swaps for an 09 WRX? I guess I wanted to be able to push the WRX on the track without fear for breaking a tranny while still being able to keep up with others. I am a mechanic by hobby so doing that wouldn't be a big deal. I've rebuilt motors. But I do know the forged pistons and the different head that the STI have make it a better car to push compared to the WRX.
By all means though totally correct me lol. I would rather not go to a lower year car if I don't have to. And sorry the original question was going to an 08+STI but now I am considering trading in for a 2006 STI instead. This would leave me in the same amount of debt. The local dealership has one that looks good interior wise and has 42k miles on it. I'll have to check it out for any mechanical issues, but pending that that comes out ok it would seem like a good trade maybe? |

Here is the place they all talk about modding the scoobs. I've seen one guy on there that really seems to know his stuff. I think he's running 313 HP on his WRX. AFAKI its not the Sti. |

So I figured I'd update people on my experiences with trading in my car and choosing an STI.
Basically I shopped around a bunch, I even was about to buy an Evo X 2008. What I found though is that my issue wasn't so much getting a fair price on my WRX, most people didn't even know how to price it because there isn't a market for used 2010 wrx's yet. No one is selling them used haha. But most feel like since the news of the new wide body wrx's and such that any of the older ones, wagon or not, will severely drop in price. I think what I am going to end up doing is private party sell my wrx now. And just save up my money for a 2011 STI, or buy any of the 2008+ STI wagons since they will also drop in price due to the sedan. |

Why are you so in favor of selling your WRX?
I pointed out that you could mod your WRX and be faster than the Sti... is that not interesting to you? Like...so you want your car to say "STi" for no other reason than it says "STi" even if you could have a faster, better WRX than the STi? Can you sum this up for me....thanks....not being sarcastic either, I really want to know. |

I highly doubt the prices of the 2008+ STi's will drop that much. While that may make sense for some brands, the STi's are usually hard to find (both new and used) when compared to most other vehicles. As a result, the prices usually will never fall that much...for example, look at the wrx over the years.....a 2002 WRX with over 100K miles will still sell for over $10K....that's only half of it's value lost. Normally cars with over 100k miles will sell for around $4-$5k (if that).
I would say that unless you are really going to use the things the STi offers over the WRX (which really is only the Si-drive and DCCD) keep your WRX and mod it a little. All you really would need to do is tune the rex add some coilovers and put better brakes on it and you would essentially have a STi.....the tune will put it very close to the sti in power, the coilover would actually allow the rex to handle better than the sti and brakes will help some, although not enough to really notice on the street....it would more just help with looks. Doing all this would save much more, than trading/selling your rex and then buying an sti....oh and the nice thing about modding the rex is that when you go to get a new car in the future, you can easily sell the parts you buy and get a decent amount of your money back which would make modding the wrx even cheaper than buying the sti. I not only sell Subaru but am a huge fanatic and imho, the STi is really not the best value for dollar when compared to the sti....is the STi nice? Sure! Does it have cool stuff on it? Absolutely! But is it worth the extra $8K-$9K or so? I don't think so....because you can add the same stuff to the rex for less (with the exception of the dccd....which a majority of the people don't really know how to use appropriately). |

I traded in my 2010 WRX base for a 2010 STi SE.
just to keep it short, it was WELL worth it. Paid $24,9 for the WRX, traded it in for $23,5 Paid $32,2.. for the STi SE. (In addition to getting my OEM STi HID headlights on the WRX swapped to the STi SE, them uninstalling all mods on the WRX and installing all my OEM parts.) Im more than happy with my decision, even though i took a slight hit. |

I cannot see how it's worth trading in the WRX for the Sti of the same year unless you have money for the trade in AND insurance to burn..... if you do....then by all means...it's your money.
265 HP could be modded easily to get to 330 HP on the WRX from what I'm reading. |

I have a 09 Wrx sedan, and have put $600 into my engine and exhaust, and I am easily pulling on STI's. I have also done other upgrades as well.
The truth is, if you love cars, and do end up buying a Sti you will modify and change parts on that as well. I think you may have the STi-Envy bug. |

I just have the WRX envy bug haha....that would be so good enough for me. I'm sad to see the WRX 2.5 GT go though. Perhaps we could find a used one with low miles when the time comes. |

Its not really so much about the power difference as I am well aware that the 2009+ wrx is faster in a straight line than an STi, but I am more interested in the 6 speed transmission. I would like to be able to push harder on my tranny without fear of it breaking. And while yes I understand that there is a general agreement that if you know what your doing it won't break, but I'd like the added assurance of the 6 speed that I know is there for sure.
Everyone seems to have a lot of ambiguity as to what the wrx tranny can actually withstand. I guess I'd rather not find out. I tried to find information about doing a tranny swap for the 09 wrx, but I haven't really found anything. I think the biggest concern, after all my thinking about this, is really just comes down to the transmission. I know the motor can be pushed farther, I know that I can upgrade the suspension. But what I can't really do is change the transmission. It hasn't really been done with the 09 wrx that I know of, and I don't even know if its worth the money, it seems like I could just trade in for an 08+ STI. Or even better, there's an 06 sti for sale for 25k. I could just trade in for that and not really lose anything. |

Sure... but what exactly is entailed in doing that. I don't know if an 08 tranny will fit out of the box on a 09 wrx. I have no idea what parts I will need to get it done. I can't find anyone who's tried it yet... I'd rather not be the first.
