Default taking apart the stock TD04 turbo.

i'm looking to take apart my turbo and do some port&polish work on the compressor housing and exhaust housing. my question is. do i need to buy a rebuild kit to do this since i'm not doing anything with the center cartridge? i'm just basicly taking off the ends and putting them back on right?

Correct. If your turbo is in good working order then you can just remove the housings. Just remember to remove the housings evenly and straight off the center section. If you take them off cockeyed you can damage the wheels.

Buy a snap ring removal tool. You dont want to see what I rigged up to remove the compressor housing...which brings me to my next point: I dont think you need to do any work on the compressor housing. There isn't really any room to do anything useful. There are, however, great gains to be had from porting & polishing the exhaust housing.

well i finished porting the exhaust side of my turbo. i really really wanted to polish the whole inside of the compressor housing but i couldn't get the damn snap ring off!!! i tired at that thing for over 2 hours and finally gave up. i hope i notice a difference by just porting&polishing the exhaust side where the wheel is and gasket matching where the uppipe meets the turbo

Did you use a snap ring tool?

It took me a while, but I found the trick is to squeeze it together as much as possible, then pull it out.

Getting it back in is even trickier, but again, squeeze it as much as you can and then work it back in.

Just port the hot side. And clean up the cold side. No need to pull it part from the center section.

I got mine from Sears. They have a bunch of different models.

If they have one which will allow you to adjust the angle of the tips, that would be ideal.

*Sorry for the stone age bump*
But I'm wanting to source out parts for a rebuild. and this thread pops up 1st... So it took a day of soaking and a hatchet hammering the turbo... To get the sections free... 2002 wrx 220k+ in the salt belt! So that damn snap ring... I have two store bought tools... Maybe Harbor Freight and Advanced Auto... Both are too flimsy to actually get a grip... A tool # or pliers # would be great... For future references! ;P"

Bootsak47, I have had good luck with this tool, it seems to do the job perfectly and is very high quality. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
