Default Mercedes-AMG Announces All-New Engine, AWD System For 400-HP A45

Quote:
Mercedes-Benz introduced the new A-Class last month at its own event organized in Amsterdam where only invited journalists had the opportunity to see the company’s entry-level model in the metal. Starting today, the fourth iteration of the hatchback can be viewed in Geneva by the general public. Needless to say, Mercedes isn’t coming out with the big guns just yet as only the non-AMG versions can be seen in Switzerland.

The hotter A35 will follow later this year with roughly 300 horsepower to take on the Audi S3 and the VW Golf R, but we’re here to talk about the even hotter A45 (speculatively rendered above). Speaking with the media gathered at the Geneva Motor Show, AMG boss Tobias Moers disclosed some pretty juicy details about what the company hopes will become the new benchmark in the hot hatch segment.

How will they achieve that ambitious goal? For starters, the next A45 will be powered by an entirely new turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Moers emphasized the four-cylinder is going to be literally all-new as it won’t have anything in common with the current unit. He reiterated output will stand at more than 400 horsepower, without actually revealing an exact figure.

Aside from getting a completely new engine, the 2019 A45 will also utilize a new all-wheel-drive system different when compared to the outgoing model. The man in charge at AMG was asked whether the 4Matic setup will boast a tail-happy rear-wheel-drive drift mode like the one available for the E63 S, but refused to go into any details about this topic.

There’s also the issue of name, with some reports indicating the “A45” moniker will be retired to make room for an “A50” badge, probably to reflect the hot hatchback’s newly gained oomph. We will have to patiently wait to find out whether the rumor mill is correct as the range-topping A-Class will follow the A35, which will allegedly go on sale this August in Europe.

While the U.S. won’t be getting the A45 hatch, the next CLA45 destined to be sold stateside will rock a virtually identical setup. It remains to be seen whether the new U.S.-bound A-Class Sedan will get the AMG treatment.

Default New Mercedes-AMG A45 to pack 300kW

If there’s a limit to how much power a hot hatch can handle, Mercedes-AMG hasn’t found it. The German performance carmaker is preparing to unleash the new-generation A45 packing more than 300kW of power.

Speaking to media at the 2018 Geneva motor show, AMG boss Tobias Moers revealed the new A45, based on the recently revealed A-Class model, will be equipped with an all-new engine to lift power behind the current model’s 280kW output.

“It’s going to be 400+ horsepower [298kW+],” Moers said.

“What we are doing for the next generation is we’re engineering a brand new engine, a 2.0-litre engine that is everything new - nothing in common with the [existing engine],” he explained. “We’re developing a brand new engine that is capable of 400+ horsepower. But that doesn’t make sense unless you have driving dynamics equal - I’m not a fan of over-powered cars.”

He said the goal was to ensure the new car is the “benchmark” in the hot hatch segment, not just in power but also handling.

“Power output is nothing without the driving dynamics which is able to follow the power output.”

In order to tame the new engine, the next-gen A45 will also get a newly developed all-wheel drive system. But when quizzed if the system would include a ‘drift mode’ Moers didn’t reveal any details.

The new A45 is set to be revealed later in 2018 before hitting Australian showrooms in 2019.

It is very frustrating... I agree. This little hot hatch would be great if available.

I'm supporting the only brand in the segment that does bring a refined hot hatch, VW. Waiting (im)patiently for them to get released from port.

You have to vote with your wallet and support those who do make the hatch. That means F Merc and F Subaru.

Mercedes-AMG's 400-HP A45 Hot Hatch Spotted at the 'Ring With Less Camo Than Ever

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 is expected to debut later this year, and Mercedes hasn't wasted any time showing it off in promotional videos, albeit fully camouflaged. Now, thanks to this latest spy video from the Nurburgring, we get to see the A45 with less camo than ever.

An A45 test car was spotted recently at the Nurburgring during an industry test pool session sporting a lot less camouflage than previously seen. The doors, roof, rear bumper, and rear hatch have all been uncovered, giving us a good idea of what the car will look like from the back. The fenders, wing, diffuser, door sills, and front bumper are still covered, however.

We already know the new A45 will get a new 2.0-liter inline-four making more than 400 horsepower, which could make it the most powerful four-cylinder car on the market. It will also have a trick all-wheel drive system equipped with drift mode. And judging by this spy video, it should be mighty quick around a race track.

Default The new 415bhp Mercedes-AMG A45 S is here with Drift Mode

The new 415bhp Mercedes-AMG A45 S is here with Drift Mode
Ollie Kew
The age of the 400bhp+ hot hatch is well and truly upon us. Welcome to the new Mercedes-AMG A45 S. All 415bhp of it. And if you’d prefer a sleeker look, the CLA 45 AMG has returned too. Pick your poison. Either is very, very fast.

The standard A45 now develops 382bhp, but for the first time, there’s an ‘S’ model, complete with bigger tailpipes, a Focus RS-style Drift Mode for the four-wheel drive system, and a power boost. With 415bhp, it’s good for 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and the top speed’s limited – to 174mph. What a hatchback. What a thing.

Drift Mode isn’t achieved by deactivating the front driveshafts, as per the E63 AMG. No, it’s done by clever clutch packs integrated into the rear differential which can overspeed the rear wheels. Remember when four-wheel drive was for safe, sensible cars? Yeah, now it’s for yobbos.

Power from the ultra-tuned 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine arrives at all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and many, many modes. Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Race, Individual… and then there are the chassis assistance settings – Basic and Advanced, and in the A45 S, Pro and Master, each with lower and lower levels of guardian angel attentiveness. There are three modes of suspension hardness. Varying screen graphics. If you like to fiddle with your car’s settings, you’ve found it. Heaven. The ultimate tweakable hatchback. There’s probably a pit crew with laptops on the options list.

There is so much to nerd out about here. The engine torque, for example. No mega-wide diesel-style torque-band here. You get maximum twist of 369lb ft (354lb ft in the ‘non-S’, as it shall forever be known) only from 5,000-5,250rpm. Mmm, peaky.

The engine doesn’t redline until 7,200rpm, which is stratospheric for a turbo hatch. AMG has even spun the powerplant 180 degrees to put the turbo at the back of the engine bay, near the firewall. Bad for heat, a pain for servicing, but great for front aero and shorter exhaust pipework. And less turbo lag. Stellar news for the impatient folks who need 400bhp in their shopping car.

AMG has even bunged in roller bearings on the turbo compressor and turbine shafts. That’s a detail previously reserved for the flagship AMG GT 4-door, now on the baby of the AMG range.

Want more geek? Let’s go Full Geek. Take the engine cover: it’s been shaped to blast airflow down onto the engine to help cool it. Speaking of staying cool, the A45 and CLA 45’s coolant can be intelligently directed, keeping the engine block warm (for lower friction) while keeping the head from getting a sweat on. It’s a mad motor, but a very clever one too. Bruce Banner with a cambelt.

Underneath, the standard A-Class bodyshell has sprouted new struts, plates and girders to strengthen it. The front wings are wider to house a phat front track and bigger tyres, for harder cornering and quicker lap times. When you’re not drifting. Which would be terribly irresponsible…

Elsewhere, things are more conventionally hot hatchback-ish. You can spec a big wing. There are bucket seats. AMG’s angriest grille has been grafted onto the front of both cars, and there’s a set of enormous brakes under the new wheels and stickier tyres. Frankly, very little of the standard A-Class and CLA seems to have survived for the AMG versions. We’re not complaining.

We’re yet to hear a price, but change from £50,000 is unlikely to be in large supply if you’re after one of the S models with a few options packs. And some spare tyres. You’ll be needing them…
Mercedes-AMG A45 S And CLA 45 S Storm Into Goodwood With 416 HP

Behold the world's most powerful four-cylinder production cars.

Following a painstakingly long teaser campaign that started last year, the new Mercedes-AMG A45 has finally arrived. It’s not alone at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as the hot hatch is joined by its cooler cousin – the CLA 45. Unlike the previous generation of “45” cars, these new AMGs have spawned an even hotter “S” version offering more power and other upgrades.

With the menacing grille up front with literally a dozen of vertical slats and the quad exhausts at the back, you can immediately tell these cars are a step up from the warm “35” variants. In addition, both feature front canards and a more aggressive rear end with a roof-mounted spoiler in the case of the hatchback and a prominent trunk lid spoiler for the sedan. Beefy wheel arches further denote we’re dealing with the range-topping versions of the two model lineups.

The base variants of the A45 and CLA 45 ride on 18-inch alloy wheels as standard whereas the S models are fitted with a 19-inch set. Opt for the flagship version and Mercedes will eschew the gray-painted brake calipers of the base model in favor of larger red calipers with black “AMG” lettering instead of white and larger discs.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the highlight of these cars is the newly developed turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-liter unit codenamed “M139” produces 382 horsepower (285 kilowatts) and 480 Newton-meters (354 pound-feet) of torque in the standard model and an impressive 416 hp (310 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) in the S. Regardless of the one you go for, the engine is hooked up to an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

As far as performance is concerned, the base A45 needs four seconds flat to reach 62 mph (100 kph) from a standstill and is electronically capped at 155 mph (250 kph). You can opt for the AMG Driver’s Package that will unlock a maximum velocity of 168 mph (270 kph), which is still electronically governed. The A45 S will complete the sprint a tenth of a second sooner, in only 3.9 seconds, and hit the higher top speed right from the start.

When it comes to the CLA 45 and the CLA 45 S, they’re both a tenth of a second slower than the equivalent A45 model due to a slightly higher weight. In other words, the standard CLA 45 does the sprint in 4.1 seconds while the S variant in 4.0s. Top speed is identical to the A45 models.

Regarding the drift mode that has been extensively teased, it’s standard on the S model and optional for the non-S cars. The tail-happy nature of the two cars can be accessed by enabling the Race driving mode (one of the six available), turning off the ESP, and switching the transmission to manual mode.

It goes without saying the A45 / A45 S won’t be available in the United States where the A-Class hatchback is not sold. The U.S. press release only talks about the base CLA 45, which is scheduled to go on sale in North America towards the end of the year.
