Did you see the cam timing when Mike had the pulley off? I'll buy a breaker bar and socket tonight and check it myself.

if the car is under warranty, why would you ever consider touching it at all? you paid for a car with a warranty. call SOA and out ti to good use. if you do not trust the local subi shop to fix it, let SOA take over the case. now, if you did things to the car to mod it and ruin your warranty, your SOL my friend.

cam timing will not throw off compression numbers, that is either bent valves or worse, broken ringland/bad rings that is causing low compression. there is no work around for it.

good luck with the car.

Oscar, the car is modified. I didn't expect them to accommodate me in any way and they did not. They read the code for free and that's about it. Compression test? $268. Results that look like there's a deeper root cause show up. Investigate further? Crack open the wallet because our tech's time is too valuable to look at cam timing for free. They went from compression out of spec to rebuild required with no intermediate investigating.

Have you seen compression drop on one side like that? The idle has sucked since I first cleared the code which followed what I thought at the time was the sound of a car screeching it's tires. Could have been an idler bearing but I'd think I would at least hear something if a pulley was seized or the belt would have snapped by now. The fact that the check engine light came on the day after we installed a Fluidampr crank pulley makes me think it has to be cam timing related. Car was fine before this. Did we stretch the belt torquing the pulley down? Possible. I'll know when I check the cam timing and if things are off, I can go from there. But to order a new short block solely based on those compression test results seems like buying a used Range Rover, I'd be better off setting my money on fire because the fire would keep me at least warm.

And technically speaking, jumped timing could bend valves so incorrect cam timing will impact compression numbers if we have to be anal

Well there is something up with the AVCS whether it's P0016 and compression related or not. It's only active for the first few minutes then it drops to no more than 3 degrees advance on the drivers side and 1 on the passenger. I've seen youtube videos detailing this as a difficult to diagnose fault on 02-04 STis but that they claimed to fix the fault on later years. I'll get another thread going since this is only tangentially related as I datalogged it tonight so it's technically something I did to my car.

yes i have seen that, when you break a piston ring land you loose compression on a cylinder badly. so i do agree.

i have some compression tools and stuff we can run some tests if you like this weekend? i can help confirm exactly what is happening/ BTW, I'm mike.
i'll pm ya my #

Yep! It's taken way to long but the time is now! I had to slowly buy the parts I needed at the begging of each month.

Got a reallllly annoying rattle taken care of. Turned out to the an O2 hole plug in my newly installed Cobb DP that I somehow missed when I looked for the rattle last weekend
Looking forward to tomorrow morning, going to do a coolant swap as well as change out the thermostat to help drain as much as I can.

i had ordered mine in late may. they didn't have anything i want in my specs (curse you 5x100) so they had to make it all. and then they ran out of material to make the wheels so i had to wait for that lol. months later and here i am. lol

The wait for works is worth it though, I know you agree lol

But ya your Bugeye looks awesome, I think some 04-05 tails would do good with the same reverse tint you have going on.

Friday the car gets taken to my friend's place tpirallying.com for a flywheel, clutch and replacement of rear main seal.
i purchased an chromoly flywheel (12.5lbs) and a stage3 clutch (sprung center 8 puck ceramic disk clutch) should last me for a long time on this car.
