Default 30k maintenance price - lets match them

Hi everyone, its about time my car gets the 30k maintenance. Its actually at 35k over right now, and I need to do the 30k soon. One dealer here in southern cali quoted me $400 without tax for parts! and that is not the most "complete" package of the 30k maintenance
Can you guys post how much it cost for 30k maintenance?
Here are a few things she mentioned that will be included
- putting new brake fluids, powersteering fluid, powersteering fluid
- tranny & diff oil change
- engine oil change
- new air filter, brake pads, spark plugs, fuel filter
- inspection for brakes, electronics, exhaust, rotors

I also asked her to single out the cost for each things, and the one that surprises me is the tranny oil change $140 for labor, $70 for tranny & diff. oil. Thus, is the price they are asking reasonable? I havent had the time to check with other dealer, but I will try and do so tommorow and update on this thread.

Prices vary from dealer to dealer. You're probably better off asking this question in your specific region forum as prices are sure to very from a West Coast/East Coast perspective as well. If you're mechanically inclined, you could do the work yourself. . .it should only cost you about $100-200 in parts depending on what you need to replace. It's not too difficult, I just did my 30k a little bit at a time over the course of a month.

if u really wanna save money, just do it yourself. or to cut down on the cost, do the stuff you're comfortable with working, and have them do the rest

but 400 just for parts seems kinda high

have u tried to take it to suby specialty in monrovia? heard nothing but good things bout them

I know my dealer charges roughly $475 for the whole shebang..

Having just done mine I feel thats a decent price......

($140 labor to change tranny and diff fluids? hmm whats their book labor rate, I cant really see this taking more than 1/2 hrs....

well after tehy itemize the service then see if you can get the same things quoted at your local mechanic... You dont HAVE to go to the dealer for maintenance...

thanks for all the replies.
supposedly the tranny labor is for 2 hours, thats what they charge and its impossible for me to talk them down.
As for why I would like to go to the dealer for 30k is because when I want to sell my car, I can at least show the interested buyer that I did the big maintenance.
I can actually look up everything at scoobymods.com on the 30k service, they have instructions even on fuel filter change, spark plugs, etc.

OH MY GOD!!! from opening the drainbolt, letting all the fluid drain, and then tighening a bolt and filling her up is about an hour. SERIOUSLY its easier than engine oil...no joke.

Do it yourself. The only thing I am gonna get the dealer to do is my powersteering fluid, brake fluid, and another fluid I have no idea how to change...

Brake fluid is easy. I did SS lines and flushed my brake system for the first time a few weeks ago. Used speedbleeders and it was very simple and quick. Brakes are super responsive now and feel great. As for steering fluid, most people use the dilution method. Suck out as much fluid as possible from the resevoir with a syringe/turkey baster and then add new fluid. Drive for a week and repeat.

Maybe so, but I learn that me and brake fluid do not mix. Found that out with my non-functioning brakes on my dirtbike...that was enough pain, now we are talking 3800lbs instead of 216lbs...

Yes, the transmission is easier then engine oil. The MT has no filter.
You need funnel with flexible hose on it.

Keep in mind people that not everybody is comfortable under their car. I have heard stories on here and seen pictures of a car that was lifted at the wrong point and damage occurred and the car started to come down and the latest was brake fluid added to the transmission.

I am comfortable to work on cars, always change stuff bymyself except up-pipe but the only problem is that I am not renting a house anymore - no garrage =

What should I use for brake fluid?

On "Two Guys Garage" I saw a great product. It was a test strip for brake fluid. It works just like a pool test strip. Just dip it in and it tells you if your fluid is OK.

Just buy some quality brake fluid, you might aswell since you are gonna do it once every year or two.

DO IT YOURSELF !!!! I did, it's very easy and you save your money for something better.
Besides, I don't trust the mechanic's to do as good of a job as I would on my car.

For brake (and clutch) fluid, just remember to always use fresh fluid, newly opened bottles bought recently. The stuff absorbs moisture from the air, so don't store extra for later.
The Valvoline Synpower DOT 3/4 stuff is better than average, relatively cheap, and available almost everywhere.

I brought mine in at ~30k and they did it for free. I guess I was lucky. I'd ask or bring in a coupon.

Well I just spent the afternoon changing my spark plugs. Whew! Not a very fun task on the EJ20. In hindsight, I'd definitely recommend some pivot (or elbow? dunno what the correct term is) sockets and plenty of extensions. The passenger side I managed to do all from the top side. But on the driver side, even after removing the washer fluid reservoir and the battery, I found myself needing to reach from below a couple of times.

So, my completed tasks in the last 5 days are replace air filter (easy), replace fuel filter (little trickier), replace spark plugs (toughest so far).
