Default Changing Coil on Plug to Coilpack...

Hey. I've been searching around for a different form of Launch Control, other then UTEC. One of the basic ones is MSD Ignition plus a 2-Step. I've read that the newer WRX's (MY02+) has the Coil on Plug set-up w/ an internal ignitor and most ignition companies don't have a aftermarket solution because they say the Ignition on the newer WRX is good enough.

I have also searched and found that the older WRX's have a Coilpack, which has an external ignitor, and runs the traditional ignition wires and i believe distributor.

My question was...What are the Pros/Cons of swapping from the Coil on Plug to the Coilpack on MY02 set-up. Of course one advantage that would suit me is using the MSD Ignition + 2-Step for Drag Racing, but are there any other Pros to using a Coilpack? Or is there really no difference and its easier to just stay w/ the Coil on Plug way.

Thanks for filling in the void of different things i think of

Jarel

Distributor? You must be joking!

The older ones do use an external ignitor.

If you want to run an MSD, I am not sure that it will drive an amplified coil, in fact I am sure it won't. In which case you will need to move to a non amplified unit.

The other thing about the MSD is the switching method. I seem to remember it fires by being pulled high as apposed to low of the normal ignitor module, so I'm not sure it can be used unless you can swap the firing logic like you can on say an Autronic.

I know someone that is using an MSD, might see if he remembers how it's setup.
