Don't buy a diamond engagement ring, just buy her this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Glitter-Greed-.../dp/0971394296

If she's worth marrying she wont give a **** about the price of a ring, IMO.

You spend 9 times your yearly salary and even then she won't be happy.

The lame "standard" is what....3 months salary I think??? I personally knew what i wanted to spend. The tough part for me was finding the 'right' diamond. I kept rejecting the loose diamonds that the jeweler brought in, but finally on diamond #11, I found the keeper.

Ask what SHE wants in a ring, then go a little over that. Oh, and have a friend who sells diamonds and rings, he'll cut you a great deal.

Well, that's what I did anyway.

I bought the wife's ring UNSEEN, over the phone. Like I said, the seller was a longtime family friend and two states away. I called him, said, I want X size, X cut, whaddya got? He said, I have the perfect stone. I said cool, do you have this type setting I want? YEP. Cool, mail it to me, here's my CC#.

Get what you can afford. If she loves you... She'll appreciate anything you get her.

Well, look at the bright side, you'd be lucky to get half that price for it now.

Check out jamesallen.com. Top notch customer service and you can see the actual diamond before buying.

Prices are way better for the quality you receive than most jewelry stores.

NO. use them for that purpose only, educating yourself.

jamesallen is a great and very reputable store. If you have the opportunity and time you can even schedule in person appointments to view their diamonds.

If you are close to manhattan (and based on your location i think you are) go to the diamond district and look at diamonds there. I spent 3 weekends looking at over 200 stones before finally settling on the one i got.

Some more tips, do you know what ring size she is? that would make a large difference in the ct size you will have to purchase. Ct size is a huge factor in pricing. Also try to go for a few pts below the tier above it, for example 88pts looks almost the same as 91pts but is close to $4-600 cheaper, so on so forth.

Shop around but remember one thing - she wants to show it off. If you get her something tiny, you blew it. Most women want something that they can show to people and hear them say "Wow!"

For reference, I picked a 1.5 carat ring and it makes her smile every day.

Happy wife = happy life.

Same here, but she was with me and ended up picking it out, although she didn't know it at the time. I used the excuse of wanting to get ideas of styles that she liked.

I spent $2000 on my wifes ring and got it from www.bluenile.com You can pick the diamond, setting, material, and size they make it and FedEx it to you with all the certs and appraisal. You can have the ring appraised later on and it will be worth hundreds more then what you actually paid.

Forget that "traditional" BS with cost!!

3 months salary is the "traditional" thing to do. Its supposed to be in case you ditcher her, she can cash it in.

Don't waste money on an American girl nowdays, they're not good for it

This is very true. My $0.02 is that you should worry about cut and polish first, look at GIA certificates/stones which have inclusions around the edge which can be covered up by the setting, and worry about color last. My personal sweet spot was a 1.5ish ct, G color, SI2 stone with excellent-very good cut and polish. The stone scored excellent in all categories on the pricescope cut advisor, as well. The thing practically glows in the dark and the wife loves it.
