Default 2015 WRX - expected clutch life?

Hey Guys,

For those of you with higher mileage 15 and 16s, I wanted to see if you've had to replace your clutch yet. If so, what was your mileage at when it gave out? What type of driving did you do (track days, autocross, 1/4 mile drags, random street pulls etc)?

I ask because a friend from our local Subaru club just had his clutch go out at 35k miles on his 15 WRX, which seems super early to me. I also remember reading a Car and Driver review before I bought my car where they said they only got 20k out of theirs before it was replaced under warranty (I believe they had to pay a portion of the costs though).

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm at 66,000 on my '15 and clutch is like new with a few rallycrosses and some daily spirited driving. Obviously depends on how you drive i.e slipping, side-stepping, riding at stop lights etc will shorten life. C&D admittedly killed clutch with repeated dumps to get that 4.9 sec 0-60.

On top of that, Subi has put in some duds in the 15-17's.... they just replaced my entire clutch assembly at 7500 miles because there was something wrong with the pressure plate and it was basically sticking 50% of the time.

New one is great, no issues so far!

I had my OEM clutch go out at 45K but i was also driving 110 miles daily for work.

My tuner recommended this one so I put it in. So far so good.

My car is running 300whp/320wtq on 93 oct. just as a reference for capability.

Car and Driver killed the clutch after all that abuse AND like 20K miles IIRC.

Edit: 25K Miles

My OEM clutch and flywheel were (blue) toast by 7k. I always had a heavy clutch pedal feel from day one, and when I brought it to Subaru the mechanic immediately suspected something was wrong. He replaced the tob, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and the entire trans assembly. They did the entire job in 1 day.

I'm a little surprised about how all over the place people's experience is with the life of their clutch. Does anyone else want to share their experience. I'd love to hear from more people over 50k miles.

why would you be surprised? some people launch their cars often, some slip the clutch too much, some do all city miles, and some do all highway miles. life depends on use. dont launch the car/slip the clutch and it should last quite a long time.

I'm at 55k with my 16wrx right now. Been on stage2 since 3k miles. I daily 80 miles a day. I don't beat on my car but I like to push it here and there. I did notice after about 10k on my pro tune, that the clutch is now a lot more playful. It hasn't slipped yet but the engagement is almost full release of the clutch pedal (haven't adjust the clutch pedal). First gear kind of feels like it's slipping just a tiny bit but the rest of the gears grabs just fine.

Really easy to check if the clutch is slipping.

Turn the nannies all the way off

Third gear 3.5-4k RPM

Mash the gas and brake at the same time

If the car slows down and the engine speeds up, you need a clutch

It's not about the miles on the car, it's all about how the driver abuses the clutch, or not and/or their ability/inability to drive a manual transmission.

my clutch gave up this month. 2015, 32,000 miles. running stage 2 since about 20k miles?? and ethanol E50 blend for about the last 8k miles? had about 5 smoked clutched incidents in the 3.2 years of ownership, all my fault. 1 really bad where the clutch smelled for 2 days, but the other 4 very minor, only a 3-5 second slip before i caught it. Partly due to excitement of a race, and partly due to my extra sensitive throttle.

I have an ACT clutch getting installed this week hopefully.

this right here. I had mine for a nice little 30k run and abused the **** out of it, but i knew HOW to abuse it without destroying it. It probably had another 50-70k left in it.

In the right hands, I don't see a problem with a stock WRX clutch making it to 120k. however in all these hipster vaping ass wanna be cool sticker mother****ers, it's probably gonna be like 20-30k.

jobber - if you stop beating the piss out of your car, you won't burn through clutches multiple times a year.

5 clutches in 3 years?!
No clutch you buy will last very long the way you drive.

I believe he means he has had the smell 5 times, still the same clutch until recently.
So, OEM clutch has finally died.

Yes, cheaper to toast a clutch than strip gears. Still a PITA though.

As to how long will a clutch last? Waaayyyyyyy too many variables to guess.
You could kill one in 100 miles, maybe it lasts 150K miles.......

It is "mostly" driver dependent.
Yes, you could get a bad clutch, maybe a bad install......these will shorten the clutch life.

Typically, when someone says they smoked a clutch, it means they killed the clutch and had to get a new one
Either way, he needs to learn how to drive a clutch

15' WRX. etune @ 22k and then E85 Flex tune around 40k (all Brentuning). Just broke 60k on the stock clutch, no issues and have done at least 30-40 launches. No track time yet but definitely spirited driving. The only visit to the dealer was for a rattling sound in the engine that increased with the rpm's.. ended up being a rock stuck in my heat shield.

Previous car was a Scion tC that I drove from 3-110k miles and sold it with the stock clutch since it was fine. Must be doing something right!

Not sure if this is applicable here, but I have a clutch i just removed from a 2011 STi (original oem clutch) with 98k on it. It looks so good, I wouldnt hesitate to put it back on and go for another 25-30k without hesitating. Granted, this car was 100% stock and dailydriven by an older woman for an 80 nile commute to work.

Its all about the driver.

47K miles on my clutch, although I had complained about this since 24K. They replaced the entire clutch assembly, including a throw-out bearing that had been replaced 6 months ago.

I am age 63, driving manual transmissions all my life, literally 46 years worth of clutch experience.

I've never revved the engine higher than 3000 RPM and dumped the clutch. Usually about 2000 RPM.

Subaru was good about it. They loaned me a brand new Outback for 15 days while the parts were being shipped from NJ to CA. Strange way of doing business, I never waited longer than a day for Honda parts. How can one complain if Subaru gives one a new loaner car?

This is all well and good as long as your car is under warranty. Otherwise you'll be footing the rental car bill.

I'd love to see the next generation WRX offered with a 7 speed dual clutch automatic like VW and Audi, or the fantastic 10 speed automatic offered by Ford and GM on Mustangs and Camaros.
