My fans wont' shut off after swap
I'm hoping somebody can help me, I just did an ej20g swap into a 91 Legacy Turbo. After wiring it and getting it started the radiator fans won't stop, Here's the problem: when I turn the key on, the fans(both of them) turn on and stay on, even if the engine is running or not. Have I wired something wrong here?? EJ20 is from a 89-91 Liberty with a silver airwater intercooler.
Any help to get things back to normal would be appreciated. Thanks Frazer

I believe there is a test connector that when connected will keep the fans on all the time...

Yeah if the test connectors are connected the radiator fans will stay on all the time.
However if the connector is not connected, it could be the wiring from the coolant temp sensor, or possibly the coolant temp sensor itself. Honestly, it could be a number of things. How did you wire everything up for the swap? |

Check the wiring at the relay. I know the RS's use a ground to turn the relay on. The ecu should be telling the fans when to turn on. If your fans are on after the car is off, then yes the check connectors or you put that ground static.

When you guys talk about the test connector, are you talking about the check ecu conectors? These are not connected, are their another set?

Also check the speed sensor. I think the car will engage the fans if it thinks it's moving above a certain speed.

Yes, the check connectors, green & black ones

So lets go back from thier, What would tell the ecu to turn the fans on? coolant sensor? 2. The ecu is throwing an Atmospheric pressure sensor and MAF sensor malfunction. The maf, I think is faulty, i'll swap it with my spare, but I don't know what or where the Atmospheric pressure sensor is, any help with any of these three would be great. Thanks Everyone. |

Good Posts Mumbles, but I've got the oposite problem, and my comp is an ob1 setup. Good info though.

Yeah but i outlined the 3 things that tell the ecu what's up. Air Intake Temps, speed sensor and coolant temp sensor. Sounds also to me like you grounded the test wires... that's exactly what happens when you ground those wires.

Ok, this might make sence, I'm getting a Mass air flow sensor error, I'll try and replace it and see where I get.

OBD1 does not have intake air temp sensor.
I'd try replacing the maf and see what happens. As for the atmospheric sensor, it's in the ECU, and cannot be replaced separately. |

Ok, here's the update, I replaced the MAF sensor and am still throwing a code for it, not quite sure why, but I think I may have wired the coolant sensor incorrectly, On the coolant rail where the sensor sits, their are two sensors, one has two wires entering it and the other has just one that is cliped on to it. Which one is the coolant sensor that goes to the ECU?? and second question, how can I tell if they are working correctly?

The two wire sensor goes to the ECU. The one wire sensor goes to the dash temp gauge.
How did you wire the coolant temp sensor? Is the ECU coolant temp sensor new or used? You can measure the resistance across the two pins on the sensor. It will change depending on the temperature it reads. If you're in doubt about the condition, I'd just get a new one. They're like 20 bucks at www.subaruparts.com |

When I did the swap I just repined the engine to ECU so that I could use the plugs from the engine to the chassis. The sensor is used, I didn't change it with the engine.
their are two wires coming from the sensor, does one go to the ecu and the other one is grounded? or do they both go to the ecu? I'm an electrical NOOBY and proud of it!! Thanks Frazer |

Both pins go to the ECU. Since the sensor is a resistive type element, a voltage signal is sent to one pin of the sensor, and changes voltage across the sensor. That changed voltage is read by the ECU, and determines the engine's temp.

One time I burned the wires to my Coolant sensor to the point where it was completely screwed and my fans would not stop either. It's the sensor right above the belt cover\alternator area. It kinda sticks out from in between the intake manifolds. I'd check that if you haven't already. Maybe its a bad sensor. I know for a fact that this sensor failing WILL cause the fans to run non-stop.

I've put an arrow to the three sensors, I think your talking about number 3, if so, then this might make sence, the wire going to this sensor spit and I had to resolder it. Hmmm. |
