lol... 45 min. you're cute. 14 year old car, daily driven in NY.
It took over 8 hours to get the front off due to rusted bolts and that was with map gas, and liquid wrench.

The rear will take about 4 hours average.

That's how much it took for me to remove mine about 2 years ago. My car is also driven in NY. Key is spraying PB blaster a day before you work on the car.

I removed it and applied POR-15, but there are some spots that are badly rusted. I've been driving without it for the last two years.

How much are you selling the sub frame for?

My front subframe is also completely rusted on the left side. If anyone has a good one for sale in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area I'd be interested.

What are the current aftermarket alternatives?

I found an OEM one for $280 + shipping. A guy in this thread was selling them for $40 last year...

My research indicates the front subframe can be removed and not replaced.
I think this picture:

shows the stock subframe with an aftermarket H-brace ($80-200, Megan, Cusco, etc), which some people have suggested is a replacement/augmentation for the subframe. The actual aftermarket subframes (Oswald etc) are pretty pricey but look more like the actual subframe they're replacing.

I think I am going to drop my super rusty POS subframe and just drive around without it. I mean if it has holes rusted in it, its not going to do its job anyway. Loads of people on here have done the same.

I have the same subframe rust issue and failed NY state inspection last week on my 02 Impreza OBS with 138K miles commute car (10 miles round trip currently; going to be 50 miles round trip from 2016).
Is an OEM part available? What is the part number?
Its also throwing code 0328 and also has head gasket leak (no oil in coolant).
My preference is to not get into a new car payment due to current financial situation.

Would the experts here recommend fixing or getting rid of car?

I replaced my head gaskets 2 months ago, replaced the front sub frame last year with one from rallysport, and the rear crossmember had some welding done on it to cover and support the hole in it. now going to cover with por-15.

yeah, been there. mine has 164k on her. want to get up to 200k and have 10k saved up before getting a new car.

Default Need 02 Impreza Subframe

Hi Folks,

First post here. I just bought an 02 Impreza Outback Sport with 48K on it (Old lady car and then was garaged) and very little rust except for the subframe, which has a decent hole in it.

Anyone out there have a subframe for sale? I saw that some folks have had one in the past.

Thanks!

Looks like I'm in good company. Also looking for an OE replacement if anyone has options. I'm in Florida, not afraid of shipping one. I just bought an '02 WRX wagon in WR blue pearl to park next to my '02 WRX sedan in WR blue pearl that I bought in '05. The Longroof is an Ohio car with lots of rusty bits. Subframe is the first project.

I'm finding a few cars being parted out here in Florida. Haven't found my replacement subframe yet, but I think it won't be hard. It seems that people want the usual drivetrain, suspension, interior and body stuff leaving some good stuff for the crusher since we're in the sunbelt, which has an entire bible belt between it and the rust belt. I'll keep an eye out for good parts as I learn more about restoring a northern car and keep them from the jaws of the crusher since it seems demand is increasing.

Check your local classifieds pages on NASIOC, or post a WTB ad in the relevant sections. You'll have a much better chance of finding a replacement.

Default My 2 ¢

Sorry for an old post!! ;p" I have an 02 wrx that was stock as far as I could tell... Went in for recall check failed... Have 3 OWI's wi requires an interlock... I can't get a dealer loaner to beat... prob a new sti or wrx ;'( anywho they didn't want to do the recall because of non Subaru ball joint retaining bolts... Now I called SOA and dealer agreed to do axle housings/bearings and LCA recall with ball joints on them... Scheduled Last Sat for Tues when I don't have school... Now dropped off the car @ 8am and was still sitting outside the dealer shop @11 when I walked home because I forgot my keys for my apt.! Get a call about 1:37 asking me questions about did I change my axle because the boot was torn before etc... I said didn't u have it up in the air on the lift? Oh well the parts got sent back... Now they say I will b getting the subframe also covered under the recall... Only downside is they say 2 days to fix it now! WTF if the subframe is only 10 bolts... I just did my used struts and hoped for all this to go well, and now I hear my ball joints pop when I hit a bump or take off... I just hope this car lasts until it's fixed!!!

A: This won't work on the WRX Wagon. You will need STi arms in order for this part to work.

I called the dealership and they said the RS and WRX are identical parts. This part should for our vehicles according to this website.

http://www.emnotek.com/p-4033-subaru...W0hhoCOXDw_wcB

Now read the comments on this same part which used to be carried by rally sport.

I forgot you said you had the wagon. My bad. I'm pretty sure though that it'll work on the sedans.

Just buy another one and replace it. There are used ones on ebay all the time. Buy it, sand down any rust, rhinoline it and bolt it on. I'm doing the same thing.
