Ive had this problem the past 3 winters but this winter the smell is so bad i cant take it. I had no clue this many other people are having the same problem till today when i finally decided to do a search. Just sent my complaint to the NHTS, going to see if my dealer will cover it but i highly doubt it.

i got this problem now im so ticked off... my warranty xpired 9k miles ago and subaru wont cover it. ive heard that getting a silicone turbo inlet so u can take the stock inlet out and tighten the clamp doesnt always work the clamp sometimes gets loose again. im thinking about the perrin fuel rails havnt found much info on this site for how much of a pain the install is for them. anyone installed the perrin fuel rails to solve this?

I have installed Perrin fuel rails on my car and a couple others. You have to remove the intake manifold to install them, but it is not hard. Just take a little time and make sure you unhook all the connectors.

I am not up to date on the fuel delivery system but installing aftermarket fuel rails will solve this problem?

Not sure about all aftermarket rails, but Perrin at least replaces the fuel lines that run under the manifold as well as the rails. The leakey lines aren't used anymore, so no leak.

On another note, it may be true that simply tightening the clamps will not always solve the problem but I replaced all four oem clamps under there with real hose clamps and three weeks and muuuch colder temps and I've had no more leaks. You do still have to remove the turbo inlet to get to them, though.

im trying to decide on getting a perrin turbo inlet and just tightening/replacing the hose clamps or just getting the perrin fuel rails, anyone hav any suggestions? i figured the perrin lines would make sure no leaks in the future but the inlet and replacing the clamps would be easier

Nice thing about the Perrin rails is how quickly injectors can be remove once they are installed. I can swap injectors in 20 minutes tops!

Your problem does not sound like the one in the TSB, rather you have a more significant issue. While I am unhappy that Subaru did not resolve this issue, I don't understand the logic that they should cover something that is outside of warranty. They cover everything up to 3 years, 36k miles, after that it's your problem unless you have an extended warranty. You could make the argument that this is different as it's a safety hazard, but that was shot down by the NHTSA.

I just had this fixed, $80 for parts 3.5 hours labor. $350 total, fix and move on.

I swapped the injectors in 19 minutes with STOCK rails (GBOD removed previously). Top that one!

Has anyone fixed this problem with out taking off the manifold? I tried and found it impossible. After taking off the manifold and replacing the hoses and clamps it's been good for 2 years now. About $15 in parts and $25,000 in labor (paid myself ).

Well it turns out this is happening on my motor too. I have a 02 ej20 in my 99 GC8. I have never taken off intake manifold, and I dont' feel comfortable doing it.

Does anyone have any detailed pics of where the 4 screw can be found?

Thanks,

-al

Wow, they got you trained. In this case its not a wear and tear issue or failure due to misuse. This is a major and dangerous design flaw and should be covered under a recall situation. A puddle of leaky gasoline when heated turns to a dangerous and highly ignitable vapor. Subaru is probably waiting for one or more of their cars to kill someone because of this so that the cost of settlements exceeds the cost of repair.

Luke, you seem to be out of touch with reality. The NHTSA already performed an investigation and deemed the fuel leak to not be a safety issue, therefore no recall is needed. "Design flaws" do not have to be fixed by maunfacturers outside of warranty, and that's where we are with this situation. Explain to me why SOA should fix this, anymore than they would cover wheel bearings or interior pieces that fail outside of warranty. Again, it has been determined that this is not a safety issue (this is not my opinion).

If you can get a dealer to fix it for free, good job. I tried, SOA was not having it, and I didn't want my family inhaling gasoline fumes so I had it fixed for a reasonable price.

So, to recap what everyone is saying....

You can spend $350-500 for the dealer to "fix" the problem

or

Spend $350 for the Perrin kit and take out the variables.....

You fell for the red herring. Subaru with the help of the NHTSA is taking a "no fire no problem" attitude. If fire were the actual problem, they might be right. But check out the thread on this problem in the Warranty forum, and look more closely. The toxic emissions hazard is the health and safety problem. For Subaru, it is a LIABILITY, an actionable one. Those of us who had the persistent problem noted raw gasoline being fed into the cabin air intake and forced into the cabin. By the time I got home the first time, my face was covered with a film of gasoline, and I was nauseated for a full day.

Gee, maybe you should appeal to the EPA. But wait! Last time I checked, the EPA doesn't have any rules regulating gasoline vapors entering the passenger compartment.

NUMBER:09-36-03
DATE:04/01/03
APPLICABILITY:2002MY Impreza WRX
SUBJECT:Fuel Smell in Cold Weather
A AA AA
INTRODUCTION
Some 2002 model Impreza WRX (2.0L Turbo) may experience a fuel smell in cold weather
(temperature below 14°F) from the rubber hose connector, located under the intake manifold,
between two direct fuel-feed metal lines to the injectors.
REPAIR
The changing of the pipe and hose size was adopted, starting with engine number 673467
to better align the two fuel lines. This was accomplished by shortening the fuel pipe and
lengthening the hose both by 30mm. To complete this service procedure, you must replace the
fuel pipe assembly and hose as a set.
Follow the service procedure in the appropriate service manual to remove the intake
manifold from the vehicle.
PARTS
Replace the pipe and hose as a set.
PART NUMBER DESCRIPTION
17544AA134 Pipe complete
(30mm shorter than Old one)
807707140 Hose
(30mm longer than Old one)

such as that. anyone??

The pictures at the beginning of this thread don't work anymore. Anyone have them still? I would like to tighten up the fuel line on my 02 WRX with the long screw driver, and the pics would probably help.

Thanks,
Phil

Here are a few pictures I took tonight. I fixed the problem with ~$2 in hose clamps and doubled up on them just to make sure . Mine was spraying (not dripping) fuel out of the the spot where the bottom arrow is.

You fixed yours without taking the manifold off? Nice... Mine was leaking on the other side, a lot harder to get to.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably take the manifold off, it was a huge PITA
