![]() Subaru shows a special tool to press on the valve springs so, you can fish out the valve adjustment disks when doing the valve clearance. Do I need that tool or are there other ways to get the job done?

![]() you can make one, or there is something similiar you can buy through SnapOn.
im using one a buddy of mine made, although i havent used it to reinstall the retainers/keepers yet...but it did have all 16 valves out of the heads in ~ 30-35minutes. tool looks like this http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/DSC_1776.jpg http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/DSC_1774.jpg and you need the larger c-clamp style spring compressor http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/DSC_1777.jpg this is only if you're replacing springs though. if you're talking about adjusting valve lash (its unclear from your post), you dont need to touch the springs or retainers. you remove the valve covers, measure the clearance between the cam lobes and the buckets, and if its out of spec, use the FSM to find the correct size bucket, and remove the camshaft and replace that bucket. your info says you have an 03. you SHOULD have shimless buckets. if you have shim-over buckets, now might be a good time to swap over. |

![]() I guess "lash" would have been more descriptive.
Yeah, I see. The manual I'm looking at's an 02. So, you make it sound like the 02 and 03 are different and the 02 uses the shims and the 03 uses the buckets. Think I'd prefer the shims... Why are shimless buckets better than shim over bucket? |
