Default First time with a subie and shes a bit cranky

Hi everyone, new to this forum and Subarus in general and thought I could pick up some good advice in here about a build I'm working on with a 2000 Subaru Impreza with a 2.2 and 5 speed. Trying to get my 3 posts in so that I can post in the NA forum with some issues that I am having and tried to resolve with no avail, looking forward to learning the subie world!

Haha I like that! anyway its a project build that was inherited and is having some high rpm issues, especially after it gets warmed up. So basically it had a terrible break up or what feels to be like a misfire anywhere between 3500 to redline when under a load, under no load it does not exist. Compression check was done and all cylinders were between 175-180 psi, new front O2 sensor was installed due to a p1133 code which has not came back. The coil pack was swapped with a spare and this seemed to make a difference until the coolant temp was up to operating temperature and then the break up started to show up again but not as bad. Next the fuel injectors were swapped along with the pressure regulator for some from another intake that was lying around. This really seemed to help, she sang all the way to the limiter for 5-6 first gear pulls which previously was not possible, but to no avail after a while the random jerk or misfire came back after it had been running for a while. I hate to sink a bunch of money into sensors and things not knowing for sure if they'll cure the problem or not.

Check all your grounds and battery terminal connections while you are at it. If you have loose connections the higher vibrations under load can vibrate the connections and it will feel like a misfire or fuel cut.

Check the fuel pressure. Judging by what you are saying it is likely a fuel pump or fuel filter. The misfire is likely a result of running very lean to the point of causing multiple misfires. If the spark plugs aren't too new pull them and check the color of the electrode. If it's white your running lean.

I haven't seen it mentioned... spark plugs?
My old tuned WRX would have random misfires at the upper rpms on long wot pulls when it was time to change the plugs.

Hmmm I never considered the ground connection, I'll definitley check that next since its free to do haha. Pro60modman, the fuel pressure is reading 40 psi right out of the filter which is where the sending unit for the gauge is so the pump isn't a concern, the filter could still be clogged I suppose though. littledrummerboy,The spark plugs aren't terribly old and they have a whiteish grey look so I suspected it was a bit lean. The spark wires also ohm checked good as well and don't appear to be in bad shape

Yeah imo, it's not about the age of the plugs, but how much work the motor is doing and the distance it's been doing it.

Mine ended up on a 2 yr plug replacement schedule... not terribly old either, but with the tune, autocross, and dd, it needed it. It seems to be worth a shot at least considering the things you've checked.

littledrummerboy, yea I think thats what I'm gonna try next, the car ran a 12hr endurance race last spring and didn't start having this problem until the end and it has gotten progressively worse, I'll update when I try!

Make sure the plugs are correctly gapped. I had a misfire on my 2.2 AFTER I replaced the plugs with "pre gapped" units.

IIRC the stock gap is .039-.043 as acceptable. I was in a rush and didn't check them. The one that was misfiring was .053.

Ok guys sorry for the long time between updates.... Mashedanalpotato I did have some luck thankfully, after swapping out the injectors for ones with a better resistance reading, and gave it a basic tune up of NGK wires and irdium plugs and new fuel filter, boom no more missing, jerking, power loss etc. Now the problem is that once the oil temp hits 190, I have gauges for all of the vitals, it won't go past 5500rpm, sounds like it hits the limiter. Does anyone know if this is a limp mode type of deal or what? does anyone know the true redline of an ej22?

Redline on my 95 BK wagon w/EJ22 was about 6k. Don't know what it is on your particular model.
