Default 245/45/17 on a 09 WRX wagon

Hi,

I have a 09 wrx

Planing to buy some falken azenis for the track,

Falken recommended a 8.5 width for the 235/40/17
and a 8 width for the 245/45/17

I find a little weird that they recommend a wider wheel for a smaller tire?

Will I have any rubbing issue with 245 or should I stick to 235?

I have stock supension (for now)

Thanks

Sidewall plays a large role in determining what rim goes with what tire. 50, 45, and 40 sidewall all have different rim width requirements as you shift from a "regular" tire into a "low profile" tire. 40 sidewall requires a rim nearly as wide as the tire itself where on the other extreme 50 sidewall is better off with a rim considerably narrower than the tire. The tires are designed differently to deal with different sidewall stiffness.

245/45/17 is quite tall and probably not what you want. Your stock tire is 25" tall and I suggest something that tall or less. Many people like 24.5" tires for shortening the gears a bit (the 5-speed is a little tall for road racing).

The 09 has pretty good clearance. Mattering on the offset of your rim, you should be able to fit 245/40/17 without much problem. Note that it's slightly shorter than stock which is again a good thing. Try to find a rim with an offset as close to +55 as you can find. 8.0" width will work for 245/40/17 but a little more rim width wouldn't hurt. However, if you have to sacrifice a lot of offset, you might get into rear fender rubbing problems.

Tire rack has the MT1 on closeout which is a 5x100 17x8.5" rim with +48 offset. Might want to check that out...

Thing is the Azenis is available in:
225/45R17 recommended 7.5 wide (my stock size)
235/40R17 recommended 8.5 wide
245/45R17 recommended 8 wide
255/40R17 recommended 9 wide (this one height wise is the same as stock)

I would like to go with the widest possible without rubbing.

I was thinking of the Rota DPT
these sizes are available:
17x8 +48
17x9 +35
17x9 +42

225/45 or 235/40 on the 17x8 +48 won't rub. Most of the other combinations are in the grey area.

I don't know what the Rota DPT looks like or why you are sold on Azenis tires but there are plenty of tires in the world available in 245/40/17 and plenty of 8 or 8.5" rims in the +48 to +55 range. I suggest if you really want that extra 10mm of tire, you re-think your rim and tire selection based on that size. Note that you might even have trouble with 245 if your suspension has a lot of give (lowered).

255/40/17 isn't impossible to fit. You just need 8.5" of width (or more) and as much offset as you can muster. You'll still have to roll the rears as well. I squeezed 255/40/17 on my 04 STi with a +48 17x8.5" rim. I need to roll my rears though, they cut into my tire's sidewall when I hit bumps.

Dude. You can put a 17x9 +42 on an '07 wagon, the '09 hatches have a bit more room to play with.

I'm surprised that no one stopped him here. RT-615 are old news. If you want cheap sticky tires, at least get the Kumho XS; Dunlop Star Spec, Bridgestone RE-11 if you can afford them.

On those springs I'd stick to 225/40 because the added height of 235/40 could cause problems. You could go 235/35 no problem but I doubt you want to sacrifice that much gear ratio for 10mm of tire width. 245/35 might be another option.
