Default Power Drop out, Steering and Brakes failed.. what could it be...

Hi All, I ave a 2002 GX Impreza. It has been running fine for the past 3 years. Yesterday, something unusual happened...

Driving up hill in 3rd gear and power dropped significantly, changed down to 2nd and the same thing... Then the power steering went, power brakes failed and the whole car turned off... and I rolled to a stop (thank god I was going
up hill)

Got out of the car, looked under the bonnet, not belts had gone and there was no issues I could see, so I jumped back in the car and it started like normal and drive it home...

Any ideas on what may ahve gone wrong?

i dunno, but its happened to me 5 times now i think... just happened recently after about 4 years.

a few times it was mid turn and i almost crashed into the curb...

every time the car starts right back up, no CEL, no nothing.

i thought fuel starvation due to it sloshing around cuz twice i was low on gas, but the driving before the occurance wasnt very hard at all... and its happened with more than half a tank of gas. i just hope it doesnt happen when i'm driving hard...

The steering and brakes went out because the engine stalled. Change the filter as Scotty suggests and check the old one for signs of clogging or contamination. If the fuel comes out dirty you may need to flush the fuel system. There could also be some water in the tank.
An electrical cause is also possible. Check all the main battery and ground connections and make sure they are tight and clean.

also you may have a ignition switch going out. It's common for them to behave the way you describe things. THey will work fine, the car will die, they will cool off and then the car will start right back up.

I've seen this type of thing before. Dirt comes in w/the fuel & eventually builds up in the filter. Under the right conditions, ie; going up hill, bumpy roads, etc., the engine stalls/dies.

Change the fuel filter as previously suggested, and throw some dry gas into the tank.

You don't always get the crap in the filter from cheap gas. It can come from a good station as well. Depends on how old the tanks are and when the station had their last fill-up. Dumping all that gas intot the station's tanks stirs up all the crap @ the bottom of the tanks and mixes w/the fuel that you pump into your car.

ah yes... those conditions are accurate with my engine stalling. never had this happen before on previous cars though.

Do you happen to have any weight (or changed the weight) on the pass side rear seat? I just had a car in where the wiring harness for the fuel pump was rubbing on the body of the car, under the seat and grounding out. Until it gets bad enough, the car returns to running normal after it dies. When it gets really bad, it blows a fuse under the hood as soon as the ignition is turned.
