Trunk and lock swap instructions?
Hey,
Despite my searches, I can't find a thread showing the actual steps involved in swapping the trunk/springs/lock mechanism. Seems like a popular mod, anyone know if this exists, and where it is? Thanks for the help.

I shaved the lock off my wagon lid, so I know how to remove a lock, so I'll try to help with that. It's actually very easy. The lockset cylinder is held in with a spring clip from behind. Removing the trunk first is easiest (I would guess just a few nuts/bolts?).
I assume once you have the trunk off, you can get to the back of the lockset cylinder. There's a long, skinny rod that connects the lockset to the actual trunk latch. Remove the rod at the latch end - it's just held in with a plastic washer, so just pop it out. Leave it attached at the cylinder end, just 'cuz you don't have to remove it and it's one less thing to do at reassembly. Shine a light at the back of the lockset and you'll see a metal C-clip that slides onto the cylinder right against the back side of the metal. Just get a good grip on it in there and slide it off (it's difficult and you may very likely gouge yourself on something when it comes flying off). Wiggle and slide, wiggle and slide. Once it comes off, you can just remove the lockset (with the rod attached) out the front side of the hole. Do the same with both trunks and just reinstall the locksets in reverse order in each other trunks. Again, never done this before, but I'm pretty sure that's the lockset piece of the deal...... |

Just used your instructions sonic -- THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
It really isn't that bad, but be very patient. As some have mentioned elsewhere, our trunks are REALLY quite flimsy, so I can see if one is going in there with brute force in an attempt to rip the C clip out, you're going to dent your trunk. Using the above instructions, I got mine off in about 10-15 minutes of patient pulling and wiggling and pulling and wiggling. One tip I might say that I got from somebody else-- I sprayed a bit of WD-40 on the clip/back of the lock, and that may or may not have helped. Again, go patient with it and it'll be a snap (hopefully not literally!) /< |
