Default Anyone know of a thermostatic fan control with digital display?

I'm trying to find a thermostatic fan control that I can use to build a new top for my server rack. I have a sheetmetal fab shop at my disposal to make the top (it's a Dell 4210 42U rack), fit the fans, etc, but I can't find a suitable control device. I want to be able to set this device to switch the fans on at a certain temperature. Ideally it will be able to ramp up the fan speed at specified points, but that's not absolutely necessary. I'd also like to be able to have a display that will show the rack's internal temperature, but again, that's not absolutely necessary.

Right now I use two Wal-Mart cheapo indoor/outdoor thermometers, a 10" AC fan, and a dimmer switch. I'm looking for something a little more elegant.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, in case you're wondering why I'm doing this, it's because my office also happens to double as the server room and I need to make things a little quieter in here. I've blocked off the vents in the doors, now I need a quiet system for venting the heat out the top. Yeah, I know this may not be the best idea, but even with the fans off and rack closed up tight, I've never seen the temp go above 90 degrees.

This could be something along the lines of what you want but I don't know if theres something that will do exactly what you're asking.

www.mcmaster.com Search for thermostats.

They have all kinds of stuff including line voltage thermostats and actuators. It should be fairly easy to find one that'll fire up 12v or 120v fans. Dunno about the digital display, though. How critical is that?

Thanks for the tips... I've seen all the things mentioned in this thread, though, except the Thermaltake site. The Hardcano 12 (what kind of name is that ) looks like almost exactly what I want, but only if its "auto" mode works like I hope it does.

McMaster is always my fallback solution for stuff like this... I can cobble something together with parts from them, but I'm REALLY hoping for a slick all-in-one device.

explain why you wouldn't just run the fans constantly like most people would with a top fan?

just curious, having been in them thar datacenters a time or two.

edit: actually read your post.

this is a bad idea especially if you have dell equipment in there. they don't thermal as reliably as compaq (well, now HP). you shouldn't let the main cabinet rise above 70 as there will be hot spots far in excess of the ambient temp in the cabinet.

This cabinet is really lightly loaded (total of 5 processors), and it'll never be densely filled. I do have one Dell server (PowerEdge 2650), and on the occasions it does get a little warm, I can hear its fans kick up clear as day. Doesn't really happen if I keep the temp at the top of the rack under 80. Intake temp for the PowerEdge is only about 75.

Hmmm... Still open to ideas.

ah. we're used to packing 10 or so 2650s and a few 6650s in your average rack.

of course, now we've "seen the light" and are again buying HP/Compaq instead of that Dell trash.

I still say constant fans. They'll be quiet compared to the servers themselves.

Oh man, I remember when I had an office in the server room. That sucked so horribly bad! I feel your pain man.

Whatever you find, you might want to think about trying to source a rig with peltier type coolers that work in conjuction with the fans, just in case. IE: When the thermometers read a certain temperature the peltiers kick in and the fans ramp up in speed for example.

ive been looking for a cheaper unit which will monitor my comp temp, AND automatically turn the fan RPM's up if it gets too hot.

I fond oens that either turn them on or off, but none that vary the fans to the temp

this is for a normal PC btw. the thing is louder than any comp ive ever seen, and its hum sounds just like your flying in an airplane

Protege:
Have you looked at these? Sounds like what you might be after.

Well, Colin, you've just about got me convinced. I think I'll try to find 4-6 large and slow fans and run them all the time.
