I just put them in my 2002 WRX...They sound VERY bright. It sounds like they are playing out of a tin can. They are very loud tough and I just think I will have to heavily sound proof the cheap ass doors. I hope that fixes the problem.
I did use spacers on mine! |

very bright, eh? yea, some guy on sounddomain.com with a scooby was all 'a whole subaru has about as much metal as a chevy bumper' and they have a promotion at sounddomain.com that has a 'door kit' soundproofing thing for 1 dollar if you get the components from there... where did you get yours from?

what'd you do to make the spacers, as well? material used? just traced the speaker outline onto wood or paper
and made a ring of wood? or is it more complicated? |

First, I did get mine from sounddomain also and got the Cascade audio sound deadening. The amount you get will cover the outside surface of the door only. You will need WAY more than this. I am going to do mine this weekend or next.
As far as the spacers go...I drew a pattern of teh stock speakers mounting frame on cardboard. I also drew the DEI inset pattern in the middle of that. I took the pattern to a local shop and had them make me some spacers out of 1/2" thick MDF. THey worked perfectly except I should have used 2/3" thick MDF because the back of the speakers barely touch the window when it's down. I hope I can make these things sound better though. These doors are HORRIBLE for good speakers. The sound waves just bounce around inside the door like you are in a tin can. Also at higher volumes, a lot of little things in the door rattle. This may be the case with any good powerful speakers though and I'm going to spend a lot of time soundproofing I can tell. |

I have these speakers and I absolutely love them. Bought them at sounddomain.com too . I did go through and install the Cascade noise dampner on the doorskin. One box of it was almost enough to do both doors on the coupe. It doesn't bother me that I wasn't able to cover up the large hole in the opposite corner of the door, because frankly, there was a noticable difference with what I did.
The speakers themselves sound incredible. I had the Planet Audio PA-PC64CK competition speakers in my doors before that and these DEI's sound much better. While the Planet's operated fine at about 50w RMS, these DEI's need more to produce the mid-bass. As with other neodymium speakers (*cough* MBQuart *cough*) you need to run a good amount of power to them along with a well tuned sub system. All things aside, these speakers don't start putting out a healthy amount of mid-bass until around volume 15 on my Clarion DXR9375R. To put it midly, that is loud. At volume 3, I can listen while driving down the road. Personally, I feel that about 100w RMS would make these speakers sound incredible. Right now I have them EQ'd so they sound just right at the lower volume levels but when I turn it up to get the nice mid-bass, the tweeters get a little flashy. FWIW, these speakers seem much more accurate in terms of sound reproduction versus other speakers I have heard. The crossover networks are roughly half the size of the Planet's, but they seem to do their job well. The transition between the driver and the tweeter is near seemless. My only gripe is that there is no alternate tweeter settings like most other companies. ie: the tweeters are stuck at 0dB while the Planets had a -3dB setting and MBQ's have -3dB and -6dB I think. The should be the least of your concerns if you have a proper EQ to tune with. I am using an old Kenwood amp with a 5-band built-in EQ and it does the job just fine. I created a spacer out of 3/4" MDF. I don't remember exactly, but I think they came with a template you can use to create your spacers. They fit perfectly with the addition of the spacers. -Jon www.nothingserious.net |

Over the weekend I went through and revised my system a little bit and I think I have correct the ills.
Here is what I am currently running: Clarion DXR9375R HU (pre-amp only) DEI 3065 front stage in stock locations Kenwood 40W RMS amp with built in 5-band EQ Cascade door deadening in doors no rear fill 2 Orion XTR2 10" 4ohm drivers Q-Logic dual 10" box with .65cu per woofer identical Kenwood amp wired in series for 8ohm mono load First of all, I mentioned that I thought the tweeters got a little flashy in the upper volumes. I take back that statement. Previously, I was running a set of PPI carbon-fiber coaxials (3-way) in the rear deck powered by the same amp running the DEI's. The amp is only a 2 chan so I could not fade F/R. I have always been a firm believer of keeping tweeters out of the rear so as not to detract from the front stage but the speakers were free so I was using them. After removing the PPI's, I still agree with this theory. The DEI's are actually capable of producing enough sound for the car without the help of any rear fill. Later I will be buying another set of componets so I can use the driver to reinforce the mid-range. As for the lack of mid-bass, well I think I can attribute that to a poor sub system. Up until this weekend I was running a single XTR 10" at 120W RMS firing in an old truck box I built (for my truck none-the-less) while firing directly up to the trunk lid. I found this system to produce rather dirty bass and not at the volumes needed to match the front stage. I revised that by getting a proper box and fitting an additional 10" in there. This system now has more low-end punch while producing a clearer mid-bass. It will now blend in with the front stage rather well to produce a seamless output of mid-bass. What they say about a well tuned sub-system is definitely true. I do still think the speakers can use some more power but I have the system sounding rather well with what I have. I just thought a couple of you might be interested in further evaluation of those speakers -Jon www.nothingserious.net PS: my high-bands are pretty much zero'd out on the EQ |

ordered them on friday... how long did it take you guys to get them from sounddomain? they gave me this tracking number thing, has been a few business days and it still says 'we will ship your order as soon as possible'... which to me means they don't update the info or they don't have them in stock or they're just plain slow, any of you know? not that this is long at all, i'd just like to be able to expect them in a certain timeframe

I think mine took 6-8 business days from the time I ordered them. It took 3 or 4 days before they shipped. They will update your records with a tracking number once the product has shipped. Don't worry!
