Default BYD aims to bring electric vehicle to North America by 2011 or 2012

Quote:
Chinese firm BYD Auto is aiming to bring at least one electric vehicle to North America by 2011 or 2012, and is considering building an assembly plant in the United States, it said Monday at the Detroit auto show.

The automaker showed the e6, an electric vehicle, and two other hybrid cars at the show. The e6 has room for five and has a range of 250 miles, BYD says.

BYD launched the F3DM, or dual mode hybrid, late last year in China. The F6DM, a larger hybrid, was shown at Detroit.

BYD board member Tony Mampilly said the company could bring two vehicles to North America, though the company faces challenges meeting federal regulations. It’s unclear when a plant would be built, if the company follows through with its plans.

Still, the company has the backing of billionaire Warren Buffett, who invested $230 million in the firm last year through a subsidiary.

Was watching the news today at lunch and they were talking about this car. They were saying that it is being released in China right away and if it is successful there you can almost certainly expect it NA. Company rep said that since the "BIG 3" have little invested in electric car tech they feel that NA is a very open market in this sector. The biggest hurdle is proving it is reliable, cost effective and people will buy it. Wish the company the best of luck.

The chinese market has imploded and BYD thinks they can start up operations in the US... hmmm, first there is the whole environmental regulations thing regulating emissions from this plant, then there's the whole crash test thing (something the chinese are known to excell in), and lastly we all know the Chinese are known for supporting international intellectual property laws (nuff said). Believe it when I see it.

Yep, I definitely think we should all run out and buy a car produced in the country run by the most oppressive, murderous regime on the planet. I hope people consider that before they write the check...

Isn't that suppose to be Rwanda or Sudan (Darfur)? Oh, that's right, they don't exist to the rest of the world.

If they would come up with names instead of random alpha-numeric combination's I think they would be taken just a bit more seriously.
