300+ hp on stock wrx trans.
I've done the reading and all that good stuff all over the forums and wanted to know personally how many guys here in swic have setups around 300whp on the stock wrx trans (late 03 to 07) and are not having issues. My trans has not seen any serious mods aside from my recent cobb stage 2 and I will be switching to a vf48 here fairly soon. Generally speaking, will the trans take the power provided I shift conservatively? Also concerned about the clutch needing to be replaced too. Current mileage is around 40k on it. Thanks in advance for input.

Honestly is all in how you drive, use your clutch as a fuse for the system and you'll be fine. You wont make crazy power on a VF48 dont beat on it and you'll be fine. . .
and thats from someone that swapped to a 6spd lol. I just like the feel of the 6mt better. |

Hah, comforting knowing you went to a 6mt. And apparently 300whp is an attainable goal according to Clark Turner. When I asked him how much this system had the potential to put down with the supporting mods I'll have that's the figure he claimed. What about the stock clutch...? Think it'll hold or should I expect to replace it with a new one pretty soon?

Don't try and shift like you're driving a mustang and chirping 2nd, and you should be alright.
PS PM KahunaKing and ask him his thoughts on 5 speed strength. And ask him how many launches he's put through his. |

I ran over 300whp on a stock 05 5mt for a few years without any issue. In fact that same tranny is now in another car with over 300whp with still no issue. Its all in the driver to some extent.

Awesome info everyone thanks for the input. I'm not an autoxer but I've been told my shifting is rather smooth so I don't think the shock to the trans will be much of an issue. Stock clutch ok for the power then.... or should I plan on changing it out soon?

all depends on your driving. i've heard people dropping their trans just getting on the highway. who knows, but there are plenty of people with 300hp with stock trans. i have my stock trans and clutch at 127k with a 16g. if you don't dog it too much, it could survive, but if you want piece of mind, go with a 6spd

Clark Knows his stuff, but I would expect to see close to 300 but on a 2.0L and a vf48 (which is a 39 with a bigger hotside) 280 to 290whp is a closer to top HP. I made a little over 280whp with my vf39 on AZ91oct on my 2.5L. Regardless, your trans should be fine so long as you dont drive like an R-tard oh PS: OEM clutch would be fine, but if youre at 40K on it I would plan to replace it soonish. |

I thought 300 was a bit high myself... but hey if he can pull it off then great! I know I've seen these numbers from the 2.5's but I'm curious to see how high he can get the 2.0. Hoping for a bit better spool though as the 48 is a bit more free flowing (minimal I know, but eh, everything helps). I'll get some numbers posted once I have everything set up. NAU autoclub is having a dyno day down at Goodspeed on Nov. 17th so I'll know exactly what I'm putting down by then. |

The only difference in the 2.5 and 2.0 is going to be spool. The heads flow very close to the same and it's still the same turbo.

And the 48's bigger hotside should help on the topend. . . like i said, Clark knows his shyte to say the least lol.
Im interested in seeing my new set-up's numbers, i might have to dyno again (then again after Goodspeed's new software on the maha ill probably net lower than my first 363whp with a frontmount, ewg, and higher boost now lol) |

Yes. The 02's and early 03's have weaker gears. The late 03's and up got the wider RA style gears. Less prone to grenading. I double checked my VIN and made sure I had the late year 03. Woot!

my early 02 trans was nearly perfect before sold it at 100k+, every mile past 3k saw 300-350 whp ..i hear its still running in PA. The stock exedy disc was forgiving enough to keep everything intact, anything with more grip would have killed it. |

only speaking on behalf of the possible clutch upgrade...I replaced my worn out clutch at 80k, stock trans w/ updated gears. I have an act clutch w/ the heavy duty pressure plate, oem-ish street disc (spring) and lighter flywheel (14lbs). Its actually a modified exedy clutch, regardless. I love it, but most would hate it. Feels like an old muscle car when using clutch, but my left leg is now buff and I am used to it. The flywheel is weird daily driving but I got used to it and adapted. I think it was worth it but most curse me for it. I would prolly look into exedy next time around.
I have never smelled the disc when I launch it after the upgrade. |
