Default 300 hp on a 04 WRX, What mods are needed to get those numbers?

My goal is to beat a STI. What mods do I need to get those numbers? Keep in mind I still want to stay within the boundaries of my warrenty. I was looking at the Cobb website and they highest set up they had was a ECU and TBE good for around 280. It costs a pretty penny and I don't like their exhaust. Is 1k enough to get close to my goal?

Dubba In order to hit 300hp you are gonna have to spend more than a G. Depending on the set up that you should expect to spend about 3g's. That will give you a reliable, high quality build.
ome parts that i would run to reach 300 hp would be.

-STI shortblock (best bang for buck) 1500 bux (with gasket kit)
-Engine management (uteck,link plus) 1000
-Full exhaust (headers, Up-Down pipe, cat back) 1100

I have heard of a wrx making 320 to the wheels with a stock turbo and exhaust and just by doing the STI short block. I would rather see it with my own eyes before i can vouch for it.

If you are looking to out perform an STI i would also recomend putting the car on a diet and suspension upgrade!

Well the average STi dynos at about 250 whp +/- 10 and a little higher for torque. To get that on your WRX you would need TBE, up pipe, UTEC or other EM, intercooler hoses, and maybe light weight pulley. That might get you around 240whp +/- a few HP, all really depends on the dyno and who tunes your car. If you want to "beat" an STi you will have to do a turbo upgrade, injectors, fuel pump, and a good tune. All that would get you to beat an STi at the strip, but then again it depends how good of a driver you are. The STi will still pretty much kill you in the twisties though.

Costs of everything above at most depending on the turbo and brands used is about 3k but thats just for parts, not including labor. Might want to check out www.turboxs.com for their stage 4 kit.

Warranty or 300HP.

Seriously, pick one and let us know which is more important as you will not get both.

The most direct route to STi level of performance (at least in a straight line) will be:
up-pipe
turbo-back exhaust (catless or 1 hi-flow cat)
fuel pump
injectors
larger turbo (vf30-34/vf22/18G)
Engine management (UTEC, Re-flash, AccessPort, ect.)

You would also need better suspension and brakes.

better yet trade your 04 for an sti then your problem is solved... J/K.

Cost of 04- 23-25K

Cost of used 04STI-26K-28K

good luck with not voiding your Warranty. Your 3K can get you that STI.

Yea and good luck getting a good trade-in value even though it's an 04... not to mention heightened insurance costs.

Why do you want to beat an STi? Does your friend have one? And do you want to beat him anywhere else than stoplights and 60+ highway pulls?

IMHO, Cobb Stage 2.5 is the way to go, it's tuned for your stock intercooler and will get to that level of power.

Can we have a sticky thread for "I want 400 whp for $2000 and I want to keep my warranty"?

I'm on the same mission with an 02, cause the chepeast I saw an Sti for is 10g w/ trade. So if you can't join em, beat em. I got about 205 whp w/ 210 torque. Only 45 away, and I think I can get there on a stock turbo!...No don't laugh, seriously.

Apex'i Short Ram Intake
Apex'i Cat Back
Apex'i Boost Controller
Apex'i S-AFC fuel computer
Borla Headers (can't afford Apex'i everything, although thats my goal)
Speedy Rims (light weight rims do make an impact-on toque at the very least- mine weigh about 19 lbs)

^Not that much, and I'm only 50 off the mark. Yes thats alot of whp, but consider this: no upipe, no downpipe, no fuel mods (computer is simply leaning my car out slightly), less than 4 pounds of additional boost, no pulleys, etc. There lots of room for growth, and if you decide to spend the extra doe, get the ECU itself tuned. If I had done that, there's not really anything that would void my warranty. But if you do anything to your car, even an intake, don't count on your warranty. Something goes out under warranty best thing to do is to cash that sucker out and pocket the funds, because you'll probably will have to go to court and will most likely lose. Think about it like this, why would the dealer gaurentee something that they didn't design on the car. They gaurantee the car for the design they did, not what you want to do with it. Forget warranty if you want to do any kind of mods.

Stock WRX wheels are ~16.5 IIRC. For the sake of lighter weight you'd be better off putting them back on.

there is no way the stock turbo can sustain the boost level necessary to get near 300 whp with the 2.5 block. I have the 2.5 short block with a txs stage 4 (vf34) and the 34 runs out of steam.

I guess I'll lower my goals to beat our older brother to beating our second oldest brother the EVO.

I don't think Cobb Stage 2 will not void my warranty. I'll just set everything back to stock if I take it back to the dealer. They already saw my cat-back. From the Cobb website the full stage 2 is good for 280 +/- , if I get the AP, what other exhaust system can I use to replace the one from Cobb? I don't like the way it looks, I want something similar to Apex N1, or HKS Hi Power.

Also what is the highest HP and psi a WRX can handle?

The STi is the brother to the WRX...the EVO is more of a second-cousin, not related by blood

Not 18 psi.

(on the stock turbo, at least)

God damn tattle tailers.

Ok so I've decided that I'll stick to a AP and a full exhaust system. That should put me to about 270-280 on a stock turbo. Is this safe?

Cobb Stage 2 is about as reliable as you get.

If you blow up your car and post about it and then put it back to stock for warranty work we will inform the dealers in your area too. It's not Subaru's fault that you "upgraded" the car and then broke it.

Im guessing you arent trying to beat a stock STi/EVO, cause I already did that with uppipe/3"TBE untuned!

Ran the EVO from a roll, so not so much driver involved, walked him about 3-5 feet, he had 4 people I had 2! (I also have stock 3rd cat and no Engine management, and he had what seemed to be an intake & catback)

Its not hard to beat an STi/EVO, until they decied to dump 3k dollars into it, and your kinda back to where your started.
