Do you remember that I used bagged ice for YEARS in running XP, with never a complaint. I was always aware of the potential issue though, and at regional/ national events I would dump hot water into a bin under the car via a dump valve, then walk it away from grid a ways to dispose of it. It was nice having IAT's in the 90F range on boost. The funny part was in grid when people would notice condensation on my A2W intercooler and it was cold to the touch. I should have had it insulated, but never got around to it. Will do in the next iteration. Also, for full disclosure, I did run a radiator in the loop with a fan on it to pull a lot of the heat out. At some small events I never added any ice. The tune was very important, and very good.

I don't disagree that the air to water route can work very well. I just think it's a lot of added complexity in a system when it's not needed

Has anyone here tried the FZ-201? There's a soft 40UTQG and a medium 100UTQG. They're significantly cheaper than 200TW options. Size options seem limited 265 is the widest for the Soft and 285 for the medium. I'm currently running 255 RE71s though.. It seems like these could be faster than the 200TW street tires, based off a couple limited reviews. They're not going to beat Hoosiers, but they could be a cheap fast tire.

For those running surge tank what is your setup looking like? What brand and size surge tank do you use?

I'd like to be able to run low fuel level and easily empty my fuel tank to swap fuel type between Ethanol and Pump (car is still use in street). I was thinking installing 2 lift pump (DW makes nice one) on each side of the saddle tank and using the current Walbro 525 in the surge tank. Radium makes a nice single walbro plug and play one.

Personally I went with Radium's triple surge tank with a single pump installed for a few reasons. Increased capacity over the single hanger and the fact I can have at least 1 unconnected pump sitting in the surge tank incase the first craps out during an event, track weekend or when I'm driving it on the street and when I spend $$ on modifying my racecar I like to "future proof" it as well for when and if I need to run more pumps in the surge. I'm running a DW200 lift pump in a modified STi hanger in a STi tank (this is in my swapped '98 RS) with a Radium venturi jet pump kit and then a Walbro F900000274 pump in the surge.

As you can see in the pic below I'm also running a pre-surge tank Radium fuel filter (100 micron) and then I also have a post surge tank, pre engine 10 micron filter in the engine bay. Lines are Goodridge G-line XF 811 6AN braided stainless lines for complete SCCA/NASA compliance and there is no fuel smell whatsoever. Like you mentioned as well this setup made it super easy recently to "completely" drain the main tank and surge to switch to E85 while on the dyno.

Quick question on surge tank. I'm installing one in the trunk near the passager seat (see picture). Does the requirement for a "metal bulkhead" in section 3.3.3.B.27 applied or not?

I remember some rocket ALS discussion here in the past. This is Robert Thorne's S2000. To be honest, it looks like a complete nightmare in almost every aspect.

It was, and it almost burned the car down several times. When I was on the rules committee we talked about banning it several times but in the end (IIRC) we left it legal. Robert didn't own it either so had to give it back to the owners.

Having access to a real race shop has it's benefits.

Yeah, I remember seeing that Prepared had banned external combustion around that time, but never saw anything about SM. I could see where the effort was worth it for Subaru back in the day since they were falling behind the competitive curve in WRC. But for an autocross car - while hugely impressive - it's absurdly expensive and borderline insane.

That was really the kicker. It's cool, but turbo tech today kind of negates the need for it. Granted, it makes a 2.2 or 2.0 act like a much bigger engine with basically no downside. After you work out the kinks, build a fuel and air injection system outside of the engine and an inconel chamber that happens to have a lot of intricate parts, have an ECU that can manage that and control it using PID control of turbine wheel speed, package it in the car, and not burn anything down at the same time.

So yeah, cool, but definitely more in the realm of full motorsports.

Thanks guys! The data showed the car had a 3rd or 4th place in it, but a catch can failure day 1 and me just not driving it well enough day 2 led to 6th. Still good to get a trophy after 4 years of down time. SM has gotten deep too. 1st in SM was 3rd in pax out of 1,100+ people, and even in 6th I was 94th in pax over all.

Car is back in the shop and I've got some ideas to make it faster now.

Are you actually using the hood scoop? My car got a lot more stable at highway speeds after I got rid of the scoop. Damn near free mod.

No, it's my inner ricer showing through. It's an MRT hoodscoop and I always liked how it looked on the car vs the much smaller OEM one, so I left it. It's blocked off though so it's not pressurizing the engine bay in any way. With the additional hood venting in front now it wouldn't even matter if I made it a vent IMO.

Do a test with a block off plate instead of the scoop. I'll betcha you have less front end lift.

I'd guess CS to start, then down to DS. Likely a year to figure out it's an STX car, then DSP, and SM.

I saw that someone ran a Tesla Model 3 in SML.

At local events a good driver in a Model 3 that is well prepared for Street is just destroying everyone. I'm really hoping that Tesla doesn't realize that their cars are really really good at autocross and release some sort of Autocross mode. Basically some combination of all the power you can use in 60 seconds, and motorsports grade traction control with no stability control. It'll instantly ruin Autocross for any ICE car.
How long till EVs and ICEs are in separate classes?

SCCA is already looking at EV classing. And while the power is great they still have to overcome the weight and suspension stuff. I do think eventually they'll win, but the lady driver in SML in the Model3 is pretty good, yet came 3rd. My car had issues day 1, but day 2 the good driver set fastest time in SML.

I see it becoming something more, but for a while it's nothing to worry about, and even when it is, it'll likely be classed in a way that keeps ICE competitive for a while.

I'm sure this has been part of the discussion, but as aftermarket EV drive systems are becoming more widely available and easily integrated, that would give a whole other wrinkle to the situation. I'd love to plop a motor on all 4 corners of my wrx

SM has had a rule in for EV’s since the Prius came out. They’re legal, but must weigh the max weight in the class. Since they’re so heavy from the factory that’s not a problem, but if you add EV to an ICE car it would need to weigh 3,100 minimum in SM.
