All of the oils you mentioned are great choices. If Shell Helix 5W-40 is the least expensive option, I’d go with that. You’re right, RL 5W-40 has a higher HTHS than you probably need.

Also, the only that that helped with my consumption was switching to 10W-40. Even when using 0W-40 in winter I’ll use 10W-40 for top ups. |

![]() Just wanted to get some input from everyone on oil pressures. Whats the norm you guys are seeing?
When I ran Rotella T6 i had consistent - 80-90psi cold start - 15-17psi at warm idle - roughly ~66psi highway pressure driving at 3K RPM I just switched over to Motul Xcess 5W40 about a month ago and see - 80-90psi at cold starts. - 13-15psi warm idle - 62-64psi highway pressure at 3k RPM Nothing else on the car has change but the oil and OEM filter. Seems with Motul, PSI has dropped at warm idle and highway driving not by a significant amount but just a few PSI which makes me wonder is it thinner? What could be the cause? What's the normal oil psi you all are seeing at idle (cold and warm) as well as highway cruising? |

![]() If you’re talking about the recent version of RT6 5W-40, the kinematic viscosity of both oils @100C is the same. 14.2 cSt’s. The HTHS is actually lower on the X-cess at 3.7. I understand that the old version of RT6 is 4.0 and not sure on the newer version.

Just posting this incase someone was wondering specifically Valvoline Full Synthetic MaxLife, a high mileage oil really works or not. Some background, I'm driving a 2009 Forester 2.5 non turbo. For several years it's been consistently consuming about 1L of oil every 4000KM driving. Mind you the car has nearly 220,000km on it. I was not the first owner of the car, I had it since 2011 eventually developed a bad head gasket which was replaced. On a side note, I noticed that many people seem feel oil consumption is something really bad, and maybe it is in some cases, but for me, as i mentioned, my foresters been consuming oil since as long as I can remember. I was shocked though when i first discovered, when I slightly missed an oil change interval that, the dipstick didn't register anything. Anyhow this is just a post for those interested. I've been using Motul Synthetic 8100 X-Clean for 9 years. And for interest sake I decided to try out the Valvoline Full Synthetic MaxLife. I found it on walmart once at a good price, like 3 x 5l for 75$ in Canada. Currently I am about 500km into this oil. And these are my observations. My mileage has increased. Before I was averaging 11.6 L/100km. And now i've been getting 10.6 L/100km. Now for the test, this is my wife's daily driver, and she doesn't know I'm experimenting, so she drives the way she usually does. I will probably post up another post at 3000km. Specifically because I will check the oil level at that point. If this oil is worse than the motul I'd want to make sure i don't run low. I'm kind of hoping this high mileage oil has some real benefits. Especially for it's occasional good prices. And if it is better than maybe I've helped others who worry about oil consumption. ![]() |

![]() I wouldn’t even bother with Full Synthetic in a 2009 Forester. I just looked up the specs on MaxLife and the viscosity of the 5W-30 Synthetic Blend is actually thicker at operating temp than the Full Synthetic.
Although a 10W-30 is usually more stable and should be better at curbing consumption. Sometimes HM oils work and sometimes they don’t. Like I mentioned above, I have the lowest consumption running HM 10W-40. |

![]() I've been told that as well that heavier weight oil will slow down consumption. I haven't gone that route because the problem isn't all that bad yet. I mean again many people seem to worry that it's consuming oil at all. But in practicality if I do an oil change with a 5L package, I still have about 1L left over, if i consume 1L during the 4000km , I can just top it up with the remaining oil.
Also I read from a 5W to a 10W might change the characteristics at cold start up which keep the oil from flowing well. It does get pretty cold up here in Canada so, better not risk it, for now. Still though.. I'm interested in whether this particular product works or not since it is occasionally priced very well for a synthetic let alone a HM synthetic. As well, it might help in identifying the problem in the first place. Since HM oils claim to help rejuvinate seals, if it works maybe it's the seals. If it doesn't, then perhaps it's something else, maybe just cylinder/piston ring wear of age. And yes i saw the specs, it's definitely not as good as motul for driving hard. And it's an old car, I don't really drive it like that.. I have an STI for that purpose =) although, I also really don't drive my STI hard either. |

![]() Is it worth switching to Motul Xcess 8100 5W40 from Rotella T6? I have a 400whp JDM EJ207 that doesn't burn a drop of oil between OCI's and I'm a little hesitant to switch because the Motul is much more expensive and T6 seems to work really well. Winter is coming and temps can get as low as 0*, so maybe I should look into a 0W-40? Thoughts?

Personally, I like the specs on Euro oils better since they meet the toughest specs in the industry. X-cess meets Porsche A40, MB 229.5, and VW502.
