You could try cleaning it again, but sometimes they just go bad. You can get the parts number from subaruparts.com, but you'll need to register (free). You can get 'young' IACVs by buying complete throttle bodies off car-part.com, I've seen them go for $100 or less, and you get a spare TB in the process.

My question is this, it is now worse after cleaning it than it was before. Now it actually throws a code P1507, where before it just had some cold start/idle issues.

So, is it more likely that we broke it by removing/cleaning it, or did we somehow not seat it properly/tightly enough? Did we need to go and drive it more to be seated correctly, get it on boost or something (we just did off-boost driving). Or is it something else - is there some procedure for "resetting" after having unplugged it we kinda did the priming thing that was mentioned, though we might not have given it as much time as called for in the instructions.

Hmm... I wonder if I can find a test procedure for the IAC somewhere - I thought I saw some reference to using a volt-meter.

The easiest way to take off the IACV's screws is with an impact screwdriver, like this:

Just use a flat head bit and it comes off in seconds and doesn't mess up the screw heads.

Did cleaning your IACV fix this?

Out of desperation, I tried that, but the RTV didn't keep the coolant out. On the second try, I used a small amount of RTV and fashioned my own gasket with rubber gasket paper, and I still don't think it's keeping the coolant out. I know it already got a little coolant into the intake, so I let it run to burn that off, but the amount it's burning off makes me think the new gasket isn't secure.

Now that I know the gasket is cheap to replace (and now that I know where to find it), I think that's the best way to go.

I have an 04 sti with a big maf intake (perrin). The car idles rough at times and is becoming harder to start. It also dies most of the time if you push in the clutch when slowing down from the freeway (or at a speed of around 40mph or so). If you rev the motor or hold it at a high speed when just sitting there, it will not die.

My iacv appears different than the picture noted earlier (assuming due to the DBW). The dealer noted there is an IACV gasket for my car but I am not sure. Anyone know about the sti and/or what could be my problem?

Thanks,

Greg

Many thanks for this DIY thread!! Sorry about bringing an old thread alive but I'm having some questions.

I own a 02 WRX and when I shift, my RPM goes up (between 200-500RPM). I'm sure that it's not because I press the gas pedal, it's really something else. I'm 100% stock. Some people told me it could be the IACV that was dirty. So I cleaned it all, but it still doing the same thing. My idle is fine...

What do you guys think??? (And please rep me, I can't start a new thread )

Can anyone help me locate the IAC valve on an '04 impreza ts wagon? It doesn't seem to be on top of the TB as shown in these photos.

First off- tested the harness going to the IACV and it checks out per Subaru specs. If you want to see the manual for that troubleshooting the IACV, click here (right click, save as...) and search the PDF for Idle Air Control Solenoid. I didn't check the ECU connections yet, but if I am getting good power and the correct resistance at the IACV, odds are the ECU connections are ok- but I will check them just the same. I am going to clean the IACV yet AGAIN, this time by soaking it in SeaFoam and using Q-tips after. Has anyone ever disassembled the valve? I may bite the bullet tonight and do that.

I cleaned it out today with MAF cleaner. Also replaced a gasket.

Followed Subaru's technique- no change... Tried to test the neutral position switch and it seems out of range. Replacing it next.

Did this service recently. Instructions were helpful. I did have to remove the throttle body to get the vice grips on the IACV screw closest to the intake maniflod. A screw driver wasn't enough to loosen it. Once I got the vice grips on it, it loosened right up. I replaced the screws with the allen head bolts recommended. I cleaned the IACV using a spray bicycle chain degreaser that doesn't affect plastic parts. Followed the instructions on the install of the new gasket and break in and everything went fine.

I have a check engine light and i looked at it and it said that my cat sensor was in the wrong place so i am getting a o2 harness so i can put it in the right spot. so i think that is why my check engine light is on but ill check it again. and what is the cam sensor and where is it located so i can check it out.

I finally had enough. My idle was starting to go again, and after cleaning the IACV about 4 times, it was ceasing to have a positive impact. So...

I just installed a brand new IACV. Idle is perfect. Expensive, but at least cleaning bought me about 2 years of extra life to the controller.

Tonight I am installing a catch can to try to reduce oil vapor through the IACV.
