But then we started building hatch exhausts. In the process we built a very accurate fixture off of an almost unused 2009 STi factory midpipe. One of the things we have noticed quite a bit of in aftermarket hatch exhausts is that the alignment of the aft midpipe flange is absolutely critical in these systems due to the fact that any angular misalignment of the flange results in the passenger side tips being canted outward or inward. Then we tested more factory midpipes in our fixture. And they were all different...ever so slightly. Which leads us to believe that another potential reason for the factory exhaust to be tucked under the bumper so far was to conceal said angular misalignment of the tips. :-/ Then we started contemplating the midpipe design and evaluating the competition's designs as they relate to frequency of misalignment complaints. And frequency of bumper melts. This has led us to a hypothesis: Flexible couplings in the front of the midpipe allow the rear section of the exhaust to 'wag' like the tail on a dog. And the flex coupling doesn't do anything to solve the impacts of angular misalignment of the aft midpipe flange. So we have come up with a possible solution: put the flexible coupling after the last bend in the midpipe. It allows the rear flange now to take the lead of the already hung axle back section (rather than dictating its location and tweaking the tip alignment) while also taking up any flex/movement in the system. At the same time, exhaust wag is taken in compression and tension rather than in shear on the flex joint. No tailpipe wag....good fit....good times. So that's part of our plan for Monday's hatch midpipe prototype. Jason

I dunno. Bummed me out too. Especially because this exhaust is made for both the WRX & STi and now the thread is stuck in the 2.5 performance tech area and concealed from WRX owners. I suppose I should just start a new thread somewhere more appropriate, but then I lose 18 pages of content that I get to re-explain.

an axleback for a 2011 is a waste of time! as you can see from the under car picture the y pipe is so restrictive! if you are to go with a 3inch thats the first/best thing you could do to your new scoobie...i currently have the invidia q300 on mine and it gives that perfect scoobie tone everyone wants. way better than stock

I put my axleback on today. Sounds great. However, despite numerous adjustments, the driver side sticks out further than the passenger side. I'm not happy with how it looks. From the back it's even. Any suggestions from NP?

Yes, and then tried other adjustments. Got it pretty close and as soon as I tightened the bolts down it shifted the pipes so they were no longer aligned the same. I will try again tomorrow. I am wondering if it's possible the lengths aren't correct, throwing off the alignment.

Well, after wasting an hour of my life, the sides are still not even. I adjusted, and adjusted, and adjusted, and as soon as I bolt it down, the pipes shift. The driver side is right where I want it. When I look straight down I can just barely see the tip. However, the passenger side looks like s***. It's recessed back from the bumper. No matter how much I move exhaust on the hangers and also move the hangers, is goes right back to the same place as soon as I bolt it down. The passenger side just seems to be too short. It's even up and down and side to side. I love the sound of the exhaust, but the fit sucks. Maybe Nameless has a suggestion.

That won't make a difference. That's the same things as moving it back and forth along the rubber hanger. What is boils down to is the length from the midpipe to the bumper. I can do all the movement and bending, but as soon as it's bolted down, it's going to shift to the same position it's currently in. Bending the rods and such would also change the position of where it sits in the bumper opening, which it currently lines up exactly like the driver side.
