Default Help diagnose my tranny noise :)

I just started getting a whine out of my first gear.

The sound is only there if I am in first gear and the car is rolling.

Clutch in or out, it does not matter.

No other gear seems to be making this noise.

Car: 2000 2.5RS-T

Any ideas?

-Nathan

I doubt I know the answer but...

What is the nature of the whine? Does it sound like the reverse whine some cars have?

does it depend on wheel speed? does it get louder or change pitch? (guessing yes)

if you depress the clutch and let the engine speed drop while wheel speed stays the same does the noise change?

Yes, very similar to the reverse whine.

Yes, Pitch increases with speed.

The Pitch decreases as speed decreases.

I have that too. I just figure my trans is going to blow up sometime between tomaro and next year and go about beating on it. Call me silly, but as long as there is no crunching, grinding, and chunking, I don't get too worried. *shrug*

That sound is when the teeth on teh gears start to wear...do you have a boost controller? Launch hard often? I've had this a couple times...in this gearbox, I've been listening to 1st and 2nd for a while...it's getting difficult to get it in 1st now...almost time for a new one. Save your pennies, it's not cheap.

yep IMPREZive is right its like helical cut gears when they start wearing they get a different shape to them and make that whining noise nothing bad and actually it makes a little more power........lol.......seriously that is untill something breaks

oh and IMPREZive your problem with not going into first is a synchro problem it has NOTHING to do with the gears wearing down. Hey dont feel bad I have a brand new 03 and I cant go into first without double clutching unless im at a complete stop
