I'm not going to lie, if they gave us a wrx powered crosstrek, with the ugly plastic fenders and bumpers, I'd be in for it. Like literally take the wrx, jack it up, and add hatchback. Honestly, I'd very likely consider one even though I'm not in the market to buy a car like that right now. It would be an entertaining car that I could trade in later when it's time to get my kid a car.

But I'm pretty certain this is just going to be a boring wilderness edition that adds some colored panels, less paint on the bumpers, and a few badges for 6K more. It's the modern LL Bean edition.

The LL Bean had a bit more for it's cost. Self leveling suspension. I miss the wood grain steering wheel and the rugged cargo area. Leather also and the pricing didn't change much when they got rid of it and all those goodies and just called it a Limited.

From what I've learned so far, I'm excited for the next Crosstrek......for what it is. I'm not expecting a "WRXtrek". Can't wait to learn the rest of the specs.

And, yes, a lot of my excited-ness is fanboi-ism.

The most logical upgrade would be to extend the plug in range to return something like 40-50 miles on electric, like the Rav 4 Prime, Volvo's etc

Lets see... the current sport engine should be the standard engine since the fuel economy is good. Then the sport and up trims should go WRX with a hood scoop and turbo that can take regular octane fuel. Id buy the crap out of a hood scooped turbo crosstrek... my biggest WRX complaint is ground clearance.. its bad for dirt roads with rocks jutting up and its bad for my driveway 2 months of the year when it gets iced with ice chunks sticking up. Next biggest complaint is its a sedan... so this would solve both my issues if the engine has some real power and hood scoop for the classic subaru enthusiast look.

Im hoping it can tow 2000 pounds and have a clean looking 2 inch hitch option... lots of crosstreks are used for occasional towing today as part of the "lifestyle"

I would buy a Crosstrek with WRX drivetrain (including the 6MT).

Imagine a Crosstrek, 6spd coupled with Japan's 1.8l turbo, upgraded pads, It would have been a winner. RTV problems and all

Having a rear prop shaft works against a good PHEV. It takes up space that could otherwise house batteries. Subaru could make the transmission FWD only, sandwich an electric motor between the engine and transmission, and change the rear diff out to a divorced electric motor.

Surely Subaru at least has a hybrid in the works for this generation. The 2.0L could be making 200hp at mid 40s for fuel efficiency if they did it right. Toyota is getting 245hp out of a 2.5L hybrid.
