Closed or Open?
I would like to know if anybody can tell me, (Vehicle specific info is OK), which USDM EJ'20s in ANY form came with closed decks other than, (early?), Sti's, or are you guys still getting them??
Hope someone can help? Sixpack Subaru

Would it be feasible to weld the semi-closed? Or just easier to source a 257, are they everywhere over there?

I am looking at seeing what sort of 'market' there may be for closed deck Ej20's. As far as I can gather, you guys didn't get many? I am a huge fan of the early stuff. Absolutely bullet proof. I have a mate running 29 Psi in a 94 WRX, same as mine, hydraulic heads Big grunt, low maintenance. Sixpack Subaru |

Yeah, I have a fully closed deck EJ22T block. I believe it is the only one that is closed deck. The next closest thing is the EJ255 Sti motor that is semi-closed.
The EJ22T's aren't that expensive, and offer a little more displacement too. I have pic's (I also don't know how to post other than a 'net picture) of my old EJ205 vs. the EJ22T decks, there is a BIG difference between open and closed! -jason |

post your pics to tinypic.com or photobucket.com highlight the IMG box and copy/paste that here and we can all, then, see the pics. If you have any questions on this. PM me. ...and if you can source good early closed deck engines, you will sell every one you can get shipped. |

Yeah they are fairly problem free. I have covered before the issues with 'Valve noise' on the later series Heads as the journal tooling was worn towards end of 93...blah blah
What I believe is this...from what I have seen here in regards to people spending bugger all money and spinning all four tyres. It comes down to Jap-spec-bolt-in 'Box's+Diff's, and early series closed deck donks spinning up to 25-28Psi Standard. Early is where the power is. Ask anyone over here. THe early Turbo's here copped a baggin' from the media as 'lunking, lurching...undrivable....", (EJ20E-manualTD05H). The Petrol Heads read the 0-100 times and the lateral G's etc and the thing soldout quicksmart. They became the biggest theft vehicle of all time and one stage in one state over 10% of WRX's sold were stolen in the first 12 months of ownership!!!(smash and grab vehicle of choice, as less chance of getting stuck on the broken shop-front, and a good inner city/suburban getaway car!!), (ENTER:Stage Left...4 DIGIT PIN entry Ign systems with 10 digit rolling algorythm Ign chips in keys....) and the rest is history.. As far as history goes for Subaru Down Under, the Earlier you go, the bigger the Whistle, the bigger bang for your buck!! Sixpack Subaru |

Hey, you say 'pretty cheap....' how cheap in US dollars???for used long motor ready for rebuild??(must be closed deck EJ22!)
I don't know that they would 'limit' RPM,(mine redlines, (limiter) at 7000rpm on OEM ECU, and 7800rpm on Apexi ECU), although I could not argue that it does not increase the time it takes to get to a certain RPM. It was known that this system was Deleted as a valvetrain lightening exercise.... I just love the stuff I was brought up on . Less failures, more power.
