Default My girlfriend needs a car help me out....

ok heres the deal.... i need some help here.... my girl friend needs a reliable car but only has about $5k to spend... she travels to long island from nj because she goes to school there so im assuming we should look for something with awd to handle the amounts of snow she gets there and just becuase i've need a subaru man since my first car, lol, i cant get past the fact that i love awd... Another thing im concerned about is safty... i really like how vw builds there cars... very solid plus they handle well also.... (i also owned a 1.8t jetta at one point, inbetween my legacy and sti) shes really not conerned about interrior. so im not looking for the luxury or nething... basically heres the problem:

NEED A CAR FOR MY GIRLFRIEND:
1. $5K to spend
2. Good handling
3. RELiable
4. SAFE!!!

thanks for ur help.... im manly looking for some options on what to do here.... if neone can steer me in the right direction i would greatly appricaite it !!!

Reliability at that price point means Japanese - not so much German. I'm not a VW hater - I had a '97 Jetta GT 2.0 -- it was a great little car - but by and large - maintenance issues on a $5000 VW will quickly become expensive and troublesome.

Try an older Mazda Protege or Nissan Sentra -- they handle well and have reasonable power-to-weight ratios.

And miss punctuation frequently as well.

Just buy her a damn used Legacy or something if you want AWD.
