Tokyopop Initial manga vol 2 - oh the horror
I finally saw and looked at Initial D vol 2 out in the bookstores, flipped thru one real quickly. Now i already knew about the character name changes which is lame as anything, but the real horror lay inside when i saw all the dialogue had basically changed gears into something where every street racer talked like a goddamn SoCal r1c3b01s. I can't quote lines here cause i don't have it right in front of me, but look at a copy and tell me that you don't agree -_-

Oh jesus... is it REALLY that bad?! The reviews on Amazon.com trash it... badmouth the hell out of Tokyopop... ESPECIALLY because it still bears their little "100% Authentic Manga!" sticker on the back
I haven't found a copy locally. I wanted to see just how bad it was before I spent any money on it. I have the original Issue 1 (which they're gonna rerelease in this new name change l33t format) and it wasn't that bad. Why couldn't they have left well enough alone?! UGH!! |

Yeah... I saw that.... as a matter of fact I think I might be the one that posted it here. They're "aiming it at a younger market in the US than it serves in Japan"
They also made it a point to say "Well some people wanted us to change it to a pizza delivery car, and get rid of the japanese writing on the side, and change their names to more American names.... but we wanted to stay true, so we only changed their names" Tokyopop just talked themselves out of ever getting another dime of my money |

Lol, yeha you were the one.
I didn't think it would be this bad though. The names I could actually understand, but changing the dialogue? I guess their going for the FATF crowd. :monkey: You can always download the manga though. It's not the same as having that paperback, that comic feel but atleast you have everything 100%. Oh and yes, in English. The whole series isn't translated yet though. I only know of up to Volume 6. Better than Tokyopoop's version. |

just went to go see it at my local borders.
they had the second one in. and, im breathless. made me want to yell my ass off at everyone. we should all be proude of Initial D, and its characters, like Takumi, and who could forget his love interest, whats her name again???, but this new version puts initial d to shame. Anyway, that english version it total trash. The essence of the hachi roku shall never be felt by the Ameican public. shame on Tokyo pop. sorry, but i really feel strongly about this....how can they fukc this ish up like this??? sorry, last point, who they hell do they (tokyopop) want the target audience to be? Friggin riced out civs? |

FWIW, I sent them a letter. I will post it here:
Hello Mr. Lewis, While I know this does not pertain exactly to you, I am hoping that you will forward this letter to the editor in charge of the Initial D translations. There were not alot of choices in the internet list of e-mail contacts, and you made the most sense. Thank you in advance. DEAR EDITOR: While I do not agree with the decision to change character names, I will not argue your decision. However, there are some translation errors dealing with technical matters that I find very aggrivating. Since you are broadening the market and bringing Initial D to a wider audience, it is imperative that you get the technical information depicted in Shigeno's work correct. This will more than likely be many people's first foray into the world of "drifting" and it is sure to be the next big thing. I for one am completely hooked, having watched and read the fansubs of both the anime and manga. I am, however, purchasing both from you to be sure that Shigeno gets the monetary compensation he deserves from this great work. Okay. On to the errors! Chapter 12, page 5. Ry (uggh =oP) Takahashi says "the shiftpoint comes on quick becasue it has a cross mission used for rallies." I do not speak or read Japanese (yet, but I am working on it!) but I understand the basics. I am sure that katakana was used to phonetically spell out cross mission and, in typical Japanese fashion, they shortened the term. It should read "the shiftpoint comes on quick because it has a close[-ratio] transmission used for rallies." If you would like I could go on for 500 words as to the usefullness of a close-ratio tranny for rallies or tight winding roads such as Akina. I'll spare you for now unless I get a request. =o) Chapter 19, page 4. Frame one. Somehow the Fujiwara Tofu Shop (private use) Kanji logo has dissapeared! Sheesh, guys. Consistancy! Chapter 21, page 6. The two speedstars are discussing engine displacement differences between the RPS13 180SX and the AE86 Trueno Apex. "Cole, that is a 10-6 non turbo" should read "Cole, that is a 1.6 [liter] non-turbo". Again, it is a katakana thing, I am sure. Chapter 21, the last 3 pages. Bunta and Boss are discussing the changes made to the AE86 for the upcomming race. Bunta describes "adjusting the wheels." This is misleading. He is actually discussing alignment changes, not wheel changes. The conversation should go like this... Boss: The settings? How? Bunta: Major understeering under acceleration, that's how it's set. Boss: What? Major understeering? But doesn't Tak drive by drifting? What are you thinking Bunta? Can he beat a GT-r with those settings? Bunta: Don't you get it Yuuichi (or Boss), with a FR if you've got the skill, understeering is better. (Especially if you are drifting) I usually compromise a bit with the settings for when he drives tofu. If you compare the current settings with before, the time when he can go full throttle is increased. etc. Sorry to split hairs, but you have to be technically accurate with this manga. Shigeno talked to Keiichi Suchiya (the Drift King, also known as Dori Dori) and used his as a technical advisor. In the anime, he even makes a cameo voice appearance to Bunta on the phone before the race against Ry! If you are not going to be true to the names, at least be true to the technical accuracy! Please make sure that these kinds of errors do not continue, or you will be mis-educating the masses as to the true nature of drifting. This is very important to me and many other loyal readers! Feel free to contact me for any future technical advice. Or contact the fine people at Super Street magazine, I am sure that they could be of assistance, and they are local. All I would ask for if you choose to use me is an advance copy of the Manga! =o) No money, just Manga! Thanks. And, oh yeah, I'll be watching. If you make any more mistakes, I'll be here and I'll be on you guys like white on rice! =o) John Jordan Pembroke Pines, FL Feel free to send your own letters, too. I doubt that they will change their minds on the name thing (ugh!) but they damn well better get the tech stuff right or this was my last $9.99 they will see. |

Just got my hands on a copy of this...not impresed at all. My favorite part has to be the very last page (the first if you try to read it like English books), it reads "STOP! This is the back of the book. You wouldn't want to spoil a great ending!" Aren't most people who buying this already familiar with Manga and reading Japanese books anyhow? If you have to be told which direction to read this kind of stuff, you need to put it down and walk away
Scott Vol2, chapter20, page 196...Iketani (aka Cole) "His skills Jam." BTW, Vol1 isnt quite as messed up...the names seem right, and they talk normal most of the time |

Yeah, mangaproject rules. THeir fansub version of the manga is awesome. I was the guy who was hosting it (WanganMiata) on my webpage last month, but the leeches bled me dry. I only get 10Gb of bandwidth / month (it was 5 but the host increased it for me!) and all the downloads used up 17 Gb of BW in 8 days!!! So, needless to say, no more hosting. At least not for a while.
So far I have all of it, and I have also imported it into .pdf format (the first 4 volumes fit on one CD-R, each is its own .pdf) and I thought of offering it on CD-R to people for just the cost of the blank CD + shipping. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM. If enough people want it, I may just do it. Just thinking about it now, I may do it where you send me $1 and a SASE big enough and with enough postage to cover the CD. Let me know. |

Looking at the TokyoPop 2002 New Manga Sampler I just picked up. *flipping to page 80* Ahh, Initial D. I just got the first sessions on dvd from hong ko...Hey whathe.
"It was such a perfect inertia drift it was crazy." "NO WAY" "With an eight six? Dude, you suck!" "Say What?" "!" Now I know what you mean. What a whooring of such a good cartoon, let alone the manga. Here on the last page, the assficial seal of dissapproval, "100% Authentic Manga" The dvd's are amazing, however. |
