Default Diameter size between 16" and 18"

I need to gain some clearance when I put my 18" on so I'm just wondering if a 40 series tire will have a larger diameter than stock or if I will need a 45 to get an increase.

Depends on the width of the tire too. Use this to figure it out http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

You might want to go to the Tire Rack and use their wheel/ tire sizing app.

They will explain the "PLUS" idea to you. The goal is to maintain the same overall dia of the wheel/tire combo (~25" for the wrx) by decreasing profile as you increase wheel dia.

For example:

16"> 205/55/16 or 225/50/16
17"> 225/45/17
18"> 225/40/18

All these sizes have an overall diameter of 24.9 to 25.1 (or therabouts...)

Increasing overall diameter significantly beyond 25" will screw up your gearing/ odo/ speedo and is generally not done. Though, some folks have gone to a slightly smaller dia for specific applications, eg autocross, where they want to lower the gearing for racing purposes. These people often will have dedicated wheel/rims for this purpose and put "standard" sized wheels for daily driving.

Good luck.

Argh, I'm just looking to get a little clearance so that my lip doesnt get destroyed. I need a thing like the Murcielago that lets the drive lift the front of the car to get up inclines
