Default Help me decide on an Engine...

Well, something has gone bad in my stock block and it's definitely time for me to get a new motor. I'm having a tough time deciding based on my needs and my budget.
First of all, my mods:
UTEC
Short Ram Intake
Uppipe
Helix Downpipe w/ JetHot 2000 coating
Stromung Single tip 3" Cat-back
APS D/R 500 Frount Mount Intercooler
APS DR Series FRP/01 Race Fuel System
Worx Tuning BOV
XS Engineering 450 Turbo
XS Engineering 800cc Injectors
Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
Exxedy Organic Clutch
Exxedy Lightened Flywheel
STi Spec-C TGV Deletes/Manifold Risers

I'm not looking to make more than 400whp (I'm making 341whp now and I'm pretty happy with it), but I want something reliable. I'd be willing to sacrifice ultimate power for a little piece of mind.

So far, I've looked into an
EJ207 shortblock and new cams
EJ207 Long block
EJ257 short block and cams
EJ22T short block and cams

I love the idea of the EJ207 and think that for reliability purposes it's a good way to go. It comes with forged everything, so that would put me at ease. I'm also considering the long block because I can enable AVCS and I wouldn't have to worry about taking things apart and bolting things together from one block to another, which makes it easier for me. I'm much more comfortable swapping an entire engine than taking things apart. I have very little experience with an open motor... However, If I go with a short block and have someone do the install for me, it should ultimately come out to roughly the same price. But I'm the type of person that once I have it apart I might as well do forged internals which isn't helping the cost situation any. I really like the idea of the EJ257 because of the low end torque, but I'm not sure if that's really something I really care about...

Really, the point is that I don't want to have to worry about this again after this time....

I guess this should go in the Conversion forum shouldn't it? I'm a dummy...

Can a mod move this please?

personally i would go with the 257 for the torque like you said, and you could get to 400whp with a turbo setup that doesn't have near as much lag as with a 207.

my 2 cents.

Sounds exactly like what's been going on in my head!!

The thing about lag is that, well, I don't really mind it. The strength of the 257 for me is the torque.

Look into a 2.5 block from I-Speed.

Life without torque is a joke.

I'm in the same boat as you with engine choices.

Crower has some EJ series cams for about $800, but then you don't get AVCS....

I've debated both in my head for countless hours and still don't have an answer...the 257 will give you gobs of torque....

For now i'm waiting on some numbers with stock wrx heads, EJ257 block, crower cams and a green or garret turbo.....after looking at a few dyno sheets on those it'll be easier to choose between the 257 or 207....

However, with the 207, like you said, you are basically good to go. With the 257 there are so many "well, since the motor is apart, i may as well do..."

and of course there is the whole budget thing...which for some reason I can't apply to my car and its mods.

Looking for 400whp + reliability ... They don't really go together ... I know that it can be reliable to a point, but really ... Throw that much power at anything and you're bound to break something ... Engines though, look into the crawford / axis setups ... Supposed to be top notch ... If you want to go the EJ207 route, I've heard they're good as well ... Throw an FP green at it and be done ... I've seen countless posts of people with an EJ207 and Green running 370-380whp safely ... Good luck ...

Basically what has been said in a few of the upper posts. JDM EJ207 is the engine to get. I have one and just put a QuickTime header and Green on it and pulled 380WHP on 93 octane out of it.

Then if I want I can tip a can of C16 and get 405WHP out of it and this is my daily driver

Did anyone on this thread read his mods list? He has an xs450 already, so saying "OH YEAH GET A GREEN!!!" means you either don't know what that turbo can do, or you didn't read his first post.

call ron hell take care of you seriously, theres no one id rather work with, they build stupendus motors, and have builds that range from not hella expensive to hella expensive. i bought his 2.4 liter stage 4 or 5ish, and i LOVE IT!!! put it through hell and it has never given me problems. burns almost NO oil, awesome top end, (feels like a vtec revving) and its got that low end you dont really care to have...

It'll be fun, breaking it in with that turbo on your car is going to make you insane....it's the worst case of "look but don't touch" you can ever have.

EJ22G for the closed deck and oil piston squirters, also cheap to buy then build and there are stroker kits, etc for it.
The EJ257 because of the larger displacement.
just my $.02
take it easy, Micah
