'11 WRX hard shifting into 4th gear?
Ok so I noticed that when I'm driving normally and shifting slowly, I can get into 4th gear very easily. However I noticed that both today and yesterday, if I am running my WRX a little hard and shifting around 3.5-4k, it will be very hard to get into 4th. I may have even misshifted into 2nd because of this but I'm sure the rpms only jumped to 5-6k. Anyhow, does shifting feel change depending on how fast you are going? I'm going to be taking my WRX into the dealer due to my passenger side door speaker buzzing and I might as well tell them about this problem too (probably going to skip the part about me misshifting it). I just wanted to know if this is my cars fault or just because I suck at shifting T.T Because I swear, it is impossible to get my car into 4th until my RPM drops down. So strange x.x

1-2 requires some effort.
3-4 is smooth as butter. but before you go to the dealer I suggest you examine closely how you shift from 3rd to 4th. I'm more likely to believe there is driver error than a problem with the tranny. maybe you are getting snagged on a gate or you're not pulling back straight etc. |

Yeah it feels like it's getting snagged by something. But its strange because I don't feel it do that when I'm driving slowly. I'll try to examine how I shift from 3-4 under harder driving.

OP, did you ever figure out what the issue was? I just noticed this today--my second day with the car. Car has 90 miles on it and it is doing exactly as you described. Not a newb to stick, but not used to this car either. I'm afraid I am going to end up in 2nd. |

it was around 22F this morning and my '11 shifts into all gears very smoothly. when I first got the car it was hard to get it in reverse sometimes but it's broken in now so no problems.

Reverse has been an issue in every MT car I've ever driven, especially my old CJ-7. My new WRX is no exception, but I just pop it in first and then back to reverse and it always goes in, just like all my previous vehicles.
However, the fourth gear problem feels totally different, it's just like I hit a brick wall and there is no slot to go in until the revs come down. I'm just going to keep an eye on it as the OP suggested. My dealership is legit, so I am in capable hands should I decide take it in. I'm still getting used to the car, so that may be a factor in my case. |

I'm still experiencing the same problem, too. I've got about 11,000 miles. I haven't mentioned it to the dealer yet, because it doesn't happen very often. It is a little scary because it's usually at high revs and it will go into 2nd instead...

I can't get into reverse sometimes as well. Just put it in 2nd and then try reverse. Usually works.

Getting into reverse can be done by "double clutching". I have the same issue. Yes going into first and then reverse matches the syncros, but so does clutching into Neutral, then clutching and going into Reverse.

My 05 STi does this. It doesn't go into fourth no matter how fast I'm going unless I kind of slam it into fourth. Once I get it in it has no problems until I stop driving for an hour or so then I have to do it again.

I called my dealership, and I'm taking the car in for this on Monday. It did it again this morning under very gentle driving conditions, very cold out. I've never had this problem on any other M/T car, so while it could be me, I'm beginning to think not. Car has 503 miles.

Took the car in yesterday. Couldn't replicate the problem, but the service manager was very receptive and made a record of the complaint. We shall see how it goes.

man, would people just **** about reverse already. EVERYBODY knows it's hard to get into.
op, 3-4 is and always was easy for me. since the dealer brushed you off, try some kartboy bushings. also, i don't know if you have a short shifter already, but if you do make sure you tighten the linkage bushing to spec. if you overtighten, it makes it significantly more difficult to shift through gears. edit: wow, nasioc bleeps **** edit edit: could also be your synchro's "breaking in". my second gear was hard to downshift into for a turn but it became smooth as silk after a while edit edit edit: this should be in the transmission section. Well, unfortunately the difficult 4th shift is back. It was gone for about 1,200 miles. Car now has ~1,800 miles on it.
I can replicate it, somewhat, when the car is sitting still, idling, with my foot on the clutch. I've noticed that if I just go from neutral to 3rd to 4th, it goes right in no problems. However, if I put the car in 2nd and then to 3rd to 4th, it snags almost every time. That seems like a synchro issue. |

Just as an update, I haven't experienced this problem in quite awhile. Thinking it may have been the synchros breaking in. Not really sure, don't really care as long as it stays gone. Car now has ~4,500 miles.

Be weary...
The Tranny takes some time to break in, cocktails can be dangerous, cold ambient temps especially below freezing keep the tranny from heating up to a good operating temp for a bit. Ditto on the comment about guys who hulk on the linkage bushing when they replace it, don't do that! If you're having shifting issues when you're driving rowdy then slow it down and learn your timing. Also, no mention of rev matching in this thread that I saw but always rev match when down shifting...it's a very cost reducing art.

The only gears on a 2011 that require effort are 1st, when downshifting from a rel high speed (20-30mph) and reverse (bc of the square cut gears). One misshift isnt going to hurt your transmission, unless it was very bad and you have chunks of metal flying around in your tranny but from what you've said it might just be something with the synchro on 4th. Def have the dealer look at it and don't let them talk you into paying anything if your still under powertrain 36k.

Why would you ever downshift to first at 20-30 mph

And I really wish people would stop talking about reverse. The thread is about the specific problem of getting into 4th from 3rd when the drivetrain is under load. Third, the powertrain warranty is 5 years or 60K miles, whichever comes first--not 36K miles. I have no idea. SMH. |

I have 29k miles on my 08 and I feel a double click going from 3rd to 4th sometimes.. it fools me thinking I'm in 4th but I'm not. I had my trans changed over to motul gear 300 a few months ago.. can't tell if it made it worse or better. I've learned to just tug into 4th a little more firm.. its a pretty big transmission, requires a little more effort than the flimsy low hp stuff. |
