Default I want to start taking nice pics w/ a 30 yr old camera...

Well I just got a camera that was in the family for prolly as long as I was alive if not more, it's a Canon EX auto QL and I have no idea how to use it, just take pictures. I guess it has the original lens, it says Canon EX 50mm 1:1.8.

I would like to use it here and there and take some nice pics, what is the prefered method of inputting these pics into the comp adn is it worth it to try and develop them myself??

Are you shooting b/w or color? b/w is easy to develop yourself, but color is more troublesome on top of the chemicals and equipment needed.

If you want the highest quality:
- take photos
- develop the film (some labs will develop film without making prints for $2-3)
- scan the film (not the printed photos) with a dedicated film scanner (not a flatbed scanner)

If you just want web quality:
- scan the printed photos

Or go digital. If you can't stand shutter-lag from a point-and-shoot you're going to have to opt for a digital SLR. Entry level digital SLR would be the Nikon D70 and Canon 300D (Digital Rebel). NOTE: You will not be able to use the old Canon less on the 300D because the lens mount is not compatible.

Get some film, snap some pics, go to Walmart, have them put the pics on a CD. learn the ins and outs of shutter speed, exposure,fStop and composition, practice with a cheap camera,
if you like it, get a Dslr
I have a D70 which I love

My pentax spotmatic and a bunch of photography books taught me how to take pictures. Practice made perfect (or so I wish). Anyways old cameras rock. I was amazed to see the quality of the pics… unbelievable considering the age of the camera. Anyway my old slr is my back up to my new finepix s5000 which also rocks.

Oh yeah, forgot about the put-pics-on-CD option. I've been shooting with a dSLR for over three years so that option just escaped my mind.

50mm is slightly maganified over a straight 35mm. Its a prime lens, meaning it has no telephoto range such as a 70-300mm 4.0-5.6

1:1.8 is the speed of the len also known as the maximum aperature (how wide the shutter will open)
With a greater aperature...lower #, ie 1.8 vs 5.6 you get more light in so you can use a faster shutter speed. less blurring on the subject.
it also affect depth of field. the lower the # the smaller the dept of field, meaning the background will be blurry. If you go up in aperature # ( actually smaller opening) then the background will be in focus
